Ignition and engine position sensors codes

The engine computer times spark and fuel from the crankshaft and camshaft position sensors, protects the engine from knock using knock sensors, and drives the ignition coils. Faults here range from a code with no symptoms to a stall or no-start.

How these codes differ

  • P0335 (crankshaft sensor A circuit) tends to be the most disruptive: the computer uses the crankshaft signal for engine speed, spark and misfire detection, so a failing sensor can cause misfire, stalling or a no-start. Camshaft sensor codes (P0340 bank 1 circuit, P0341 bank 1 range or performance, P0345 bank 2 circuit) affect how the computer works out cam timing and which cylinder is firing; depending on the engine they range from a hard start to a no-start.
  • P0340 and P0345 are circuit codes (no signal or wrong signal type); P0341 means a signal is present but does not match what the crankshaft sensor says, which can be a sensor, a reluctor or a timing problem.
  • Knock sensor codes (P0325 sensor 1 circuit, P0332 sensor 2 circuit low) report a problem in the sensor's circuit, not that the engine is actually knocking. They point to the sensor, its connector or its wiring first.
  • P0351 is the control circuit for ignition coil A: an electrical fault in that coil's primary side, which is different from a misfire code that only reports the result (a cylinder that did not fire).

Codes that show up together

  • P0340 or P0335 with P0016: fix the sensor circuit first, then check whether the cam-crank correlation code returns.
  • P0351 with a misfire code on the cylinder that coil serves: the circuit code is the more specific lead, so test that coil and its wiring before the plug or injector.
