Vehicle speed, idle control and engine electrical codes

These codes cover inputs and outputs the engine computer depends on but that are not part of a single emissions system: the vehicle speed sensor, idle speed control, the engine oil pressure sensor and the system voltage the computer runs on.

How these codes differ

  • P0507 means idle speed is higher than the computer targeted; the regulation defines an idle control fault as not reaching target idle within a set range. Higher than expected idle often points to extra air getting in (a vacuum leak or a dirty or sticking throttle) rather than the speed sensor.
  • P0500 means the vehicle speed signal is missing or implausible. Other systems use that signal, so the symptoms (for example a speedometer that drops out) can appear away from the engine.
  • P0520 (circuit) and P0521 (range or performance) are about the oil pressure sensor or switch reading, not a confirmed loss of oil pressure. They still deserve a prompt real oil level and oil pressure check, because an oil pressure warning on the dash is a stop-driving condition.
  • P0562 means the computer saw system voltage below what it expects, which points to the charging system, battery or connections. A charging system warning light with it is more urgent than the code alone.

Codes that show up together

  • P0562 with other sensor codes: low voltage can make several unrelated sensors look faulty, so fix the voltage problem first and recheck.
  • P0507 with P0171: extra unmetered air can both raise idle and make the mixture lean, so look for a vacuum leak first.
