Drivetrain, 4WD and AWD codes

Four-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive systems send engine power to both axles through a transfer case, a power transfer unit or an electronically controlled coupling. A control module decides how much torque goes to each axle and switches between modes. A fault usually turns on a 4WD or AWD warning and leaves the vehicle in two-wheel drive.

How these codes differ

  • Most drivetrain codes are manufacturer-specific, so the same number means different things on different makes and the carmaker's definition is the only reliable meaning.
  • Electrical codes (mode switch, shift motor, coupling solenoid, position sensor) point to the control circuit. Driving on with a blinking 4WD warning can damage the system, so it is worth having checked promptly.
  • Wheel speed signals usually come from the ABS sensors, so an ABS wheel speed fault can also disable 4WD or AWD control.
