Variable valve timing (VVT) codes

Variable valve timing lets the engine computer shift camshaft timing while driving, using engine oil pressure routed through a control solenoid to a phaser on the camshaft. The computer compares where it wants the camshaft with where the camshaft position sensor says it is. Codes set when the camshaft is out of position, too slow to move, or out of step with the crankshaft.

How these codes differ

  • P0010 is an electrical fault in the intake camshaft control solenoid circuit (bank 1): the computer sees a problem with the wiring or the solenoid coil, not with timing itself.
  • P0011 (intake) and P0014 (exhaust camshaft B) are performance codes: the circuit is fine but the camshaft did not reach the position the computer asked for. P0012 is the intake version where timing stays too far retarded. These point toward a sticking or clogged solenoid or a phaser problem rather than wiring.
  • P0016 and P0017 are correlation codes: they compare the crankshaft sensor with a camshaft sensor (A or B) and say the two shafts are out of their expected relationship. That can be a stretched or jumped timing chain or belt as well as a VVT fault, which is why the regulation requires cam-crank alignment checking on engines with VVT.
  • In short: circuit codes send you to wiring and the solenoid, performance codes to oil and the solenoid's movement, and correlation codes to the mechanical timing relationship.

Codes that show up together

  • P0011 with P0014 or with P0016: several camshaft-timing codes at once are worth diagnosing together; MOTOR reports camshaft timing codes from clogged solenoid screens, fixed with a new solenoid and an oil change.
  • P0016 or P0017 with crankshaft or camshaft sensor codes: fix the sensor circuit first, because a correlation test is only valid when both sensors read correctly.
