P2652: Rocker arm oil pressure switch B (bank 1) fault, as Honda describes it
P2652 rocker arm oil pressure switch B
Severity: Inspect soon
Honda Odyssey and Pilot owners with this code report rough running, misfire on some cylinders and lost power at highway speed, so it should be inspected soon.
It gets more serious if:
- Stop: Stop and have it checked if the check engine light flashes or the engine shakes badly or loses power, as a flashing light means active misfire.
P2652 in short
P2652 is Honda's rocker arm oil pressure switch B, bank 1, fault; Honda says the switch signal is stuck on. It is tied to the variable cylinder management system, and owners report rough running, misfire and lost power. Dealers replaced the switch. Have it inspected soon.
On Honda engines with variable cylinder management, a rocker arm oil pressure switch tells the computer whether oil pressure is reaching the system that pauses cylinders. P2652 sets when the B switch on bank 1 reads wrong.
Honda's dealer message for 2017 Odyssey, Pilot and Ridgeline calls it Rocker Arm Oil Pressure Switch B (Bank 1) Stuck On, with P3400 (valve pause system stuck off) and rough running. An older Honda bulletin for 2002-2013 models lists P2652 as circuit high voltage and says the switch may fail intermittently.
Two Odyssey owners say dealers replaced the switch, one also replacing the rear spool valve; one reports the engine running on three cylinders and misfire codes for cylinders 1, 2, 3 and 6.
Most likely causes
Cause 1: Rocker arm oil pressure switch faulty or failing intermittently
Supported by vehicle data- Why it ranks here
- Honda's older bulletin says the switch may fail intermittently, and two Odyssey owners report dealers replacing it for P2652.
- What would change this
- Rises if the code returns after clearing and the switch signal reads wrong on a scan tool. Falls if the code does not return after the switch is replaced.
Cause 2: Valve pause system oil control (spool valve) fault
Possible — needs testing- Why it ranks here
- One Odyssey owner says a rear spool valve was replaced after the switch before the code stopped; a single report, so it ranks lower.
- What would change this
- Rises if the switch is new and the code still sets. Falls if the code clears after a new switch.
What to test first
Start at step 1. Each result tells you what it means and where to go next.
Step 1: Read all stored codes and freeze-frame data, noting P3400 and any misfire codes stored with P2652. Honda asks to inspect before repair on the 2017 models, so call a dealer.
IfP2652 with P3400 on a 2017 Odyssey, Pilot or Ridgeline
It meansHonda has a dealer message for this pair; contact a dealer.
IfP2652 alone on an older Honda
It meansHonda's bulletin says the switch may be intermittent; check it.
Step 2: Have a shop check the switch wiring and signal and the oil level, then the switch itself.
Warning:The switch sits in the engine oil circuit near hot parts; low oil level or pressure can damage the engine, so a shop should do this.
IfSwitch signal reads wrong or wiring is good
It meansThe switch is suspect.
Points to: Rocker arm oil pressure switch faulty or failing intermittently
IfNew switch and code returns
It meansCheck the oil control valve.
Points to: Valve pause system oil control (spool valve) fault
Symptoms
- Check engine light, sometimes with emissions warning
- Rough running or engine on fewer cylinders
- Loss of power at highway speed Gets more serious: stop and have it checked.
Compare with: Check engine light with loss of power
How to fix
Step 1: With the engine cold and level, check the engine oil on the dipstick, and book the car in rather than clearing the code.
