Body electrical codes

Body electrical covers the modules and circuits outside the engine and chassis: the body control module, keys and the immobilizer, exterior and interior lighting, door locks, the instrument cluster and the power feeds to these modules. These codes start with B and rarely affect emissions, but some can stop the engine starting or turn off lights the driver relies on.

How these codes differ

  • Immobilizer and key codes mean the car did not recognise the key's coded chip. The engine may crank but not start, or start and stall, and an immobilizer or security light usually blinks.
  • Module supply voltage codes mean a body module saw battery voltage too low or too high. They point to the battery, charging system or the module's own fuse and ground before the module itself.
  • Lamp and output circuit codes concern a single output the module drives (a bulb, a lock motor, a relay). They point to that circuit's wiring, the bulb or the motor rather than the module.
  • Most body codes are manufacturer-specific (B1xxx and B2xxx), so the meaning has to come from the carmaker. Airbag and seat-belt restraint codes also start with B but belong to the airbag (SRS) system.
