P0524: Engine oil pressure too low

Low engine oil pressure

P0524 in short

P0524 means the engine computer measured oil pressure lower than it should be. Low or worn-out oil is the most common cause; a sticking oil pressure control valve, a bad sensor or connector, an internal oil leak or worn bearings are others. Stop the engine and check the oil level before driving further.

An oil pressure sensor reports pressure to the engine computer. When the reading stays below the expected value for the engine speed and temperature, it sets P0524. Some engines also show an oil pressure warning, but owners report the code without one.

Start with the oil. A low level or the wrong or degraded oil is the usual cause. After that, makers' bulletins point to a stuck oil pressure control valve from debris (Mazda), liquid in the sensor connector (Ford F-150), an internal leak at an oil gallery seal (Ford 3.0L), and heavy oil consumption from worn valve guides (Ford 2.7L and 3.0L).

Only a mechanical gauge reading tells you whether pressure is really low or the sensor is wrong. Until that is known, treat it as real low pressure.

Most likely causes

  1. Cause 1: Low oil level or wrong or degraded oil

    Common general cause
    Why it ranks here
The simplest and most common reason oil pressure drops. An NHTSA complaint describes P0524 with a nearly dry crankcase and no oil warning.
    What would change this
Rises if the dipstick reads low or the oil is overdue for a change. Falls if the oil is full and fresh.
  2. Cause 2: Sticking oil pressure control valve or relief valve from debris (Mazda)

    Supported by vehicle data
    Why it ranks here
Mazda bulletins tie P0524 to debris at the oil pump relief valve or oil control valve, a solenoid stuck by contaminated oil, machining debris in the control valve, and slow valve response fixed with PCM software on the CX-5.
    What would change this
Rises on the listed Mazdas with no engine noise and normal oil level.
How to test the engine oil pump
  3. Cause 3: Liquid in the oil pressure sensor connector or a failed sensor

    Supported by vehicle data
    Why it ranks here
Ford SSM 46526 traces P0521 through P0524 on 2016-2017 F-150 3.5L and 5.0L engines to liquid in the oil pressure sensor connector.
    What would change this
Rises if a mechanical gauge shows normal pressure while the scan tool shows low.
  4. Cause 4: Internal oil leak at an oil gallery seal (Ford 3.0L)

    Supported by vehicle data
    Why it ranks here
Ford SSM 51764 points P0521 and P0524 on the 3.0L Explorer to an internal oil pressure leak; check gallery tube alignment and replace the gallery seal.
    What would change this
Rises if real pressure is low with full, correct oil on the listed engines.
  5. Cause 5: High oil consumption from worn valve guides (Ford 2.7L and 3.0L)

    Supported by vehicle data
    Why it ranks here
Ford TSB 19-2243 covers oil consumption with P0524 and P06DD on some 2016-2017 Edge, Fusion, MKX, MKZ and Continental with 2.7L or 3.0L engines built in a set window; the fix is new cylinder heads.
    What would change this
Rises if the oil level keeps dropping between changes with no visible leak.
  6. Cause 6: Worn engine bearings or oil pump

    Possible — needs testing
    Why it ranks here
Worn bearings and a weak pump let pressure bleed off. An NHTSA complaint describes P0524 with engine bearing failure.
    What would change this
Rises with knocking, high mileage, or low gauge pressure despite correct oil.
How to test the engine oil pump

What to test first

Start at step 1. Each result tells you what it means and where to go next.

  1. Step 1: With the engine off on level ground, check the oil level and condition on the dipstick.

    Low risk

  2. Step 2: Ask a dealer whether a bulletin covers P0524 on your VIN; Mazda and Ford have several.

    Low risk

  3. Step 3: Have a shop fit a mechanical oil pressure gauge in place of the sensor and compare the reading with the specification and with the scan tool.

Best left to a shopTool: mechanical oil pressure gauge, scan tool

Warning:Don't keep running an engine that may have low oil pressure. A shop will run it only briefly to take the reading.

Symptoms

  • Oil pressure warning light or message Gets more serious: stop and have it checked.
  • Check engine light, sometimes with no oil warning
  • Ticking, rattling or knocking from the engine Gets more serious: stop and have it checked.
  • Reduced power or limp mode (reported on the Ford Bronco 2.7L) Gets more serious: stop and have it checked.

How to fix

We don't give DIY repair steps for a Stop code. Get the car inspected before you drive it; the tests above help you understand what a technician will check.

Parts and cost context

  • Engine oil pump:Confirm real oil pressure with a gauge before replacing the pump; on many engines it sits in the oil pan or behind the timing cover, so it is a large job. Labor varies; get a quote.

P0524 questions

Can I drive with P0524?

Not until you know the oil pressure is good. Stop, check the oil level, and have pressure measured with a gauge. Driving on real low oil pressure can ruin the engine quickly.

Why is there no oil light with P0524?

The code can set before the warning light threshold is reached; an owner reported P0524 with a nearly empty crankcase and no light. Check the dipstick whenever this code appears.
