P0585 in short

P0585 means the two signals from the cruise control multi-function switch do not match each other. TroubleCodes.net lists a mechanical fault. A 2008 Jeep Wrangler owner traced it to a bad clock spring. Cruise control usually stops working, and there is no sign of a driving hazard.

The cruise control switch sends two signals so the computer can check one against the other. If they disagree, it sets P0585 and usually disables cruise control.

TroubleCodes.net gives a mechanical fault as the probable cause. In the Wrangler complaint the code was read as speed control switch 1/2 correlation and the fault was a bad clock spring, the coiled wiring behind the steering wheel that carries switch signals.

The clock spring sits with the airbag, so its replacement belongs in a shop.

Most likely causes

  1. Cause 1: Worn clock spring (steering wheel wiring)

    Supported by vehicle data
    Why it ranks here
The one complaint that states the cause names a bad clock spring, and the switch signals pass through it.
    What would change this
Rises if cruise buttons work only at some wheel positions. Falls if the signals are steady with the wheel turned.
  2. Cause 2: Faulty cruise control multi-function switch

    Common general cause
    Why it ranks here
TroubleCodes.net gives a mechanical fault as the probable cause, which fits a worn switch.
    What would change this
Rises if the switch resistance in each position is outside spec. Falls if it tests to spec.

What to test first

Start at step 1. Each result tells you what it means and where to go next.

  1. Step 1: Try each cruise control button and note which fail, and whether turning the steering wheel changes it.

    Low risk

  2. Step 2: Have a shop measure the switch signals and the clock spring continuity.

Best left to a shopTool: scan tool, multimeter

Warning:The clock spring and switch are in the steering column with the driver airbag. Disconnecting the battery and following airbag procedure is required; do not remove the wheel without it.

Symptoms

  • Cruise control will not engage
  • Check engine light
