P250F: The engine oil level signal says the oil is low

Engine oil level too low

P250F in short

P250F means the engine oil level signal says the oil is low. On 2021-2022 Mazdas, Mazda traces it to oil being used up because exhaust-side valve stem seals are damaged. Check the dipstick soon and top up with the oil your manual specifies. A shop should look at repeat cases.

Some engines have an oil level sensor that reports to the computer. P250F is stored when that signal says the oil is low, and the dashboard shows a low oil level warning with the check engine light.

On the 2021 and 2022 Mazda3, Mazda6, CX-30, CX-5 and CX-9, Mazda's bulletins say the oil level has actually dropped to near low, and trace it to oil consumption from damaged exhaust-side valve stem seals. The first bulletin says no leak is visible and the root cause was not yet known; later ones describe a modified seal and then a special service program for replacing the seals.

A sensor or wiring fault is also possible, since TroubleCodes.net lists wiring, the oil level sensor and the computer, but Mazda's bulletins say the level really was low.

Most likely causes

  1. Cause 1: Oil being used up past damaged valve stem seals (2021-2022 Mazda)

    Supported by vehicle data
    Why it ranks here
Four Mazda bulletins describe P250F:00 with a really low oil level and attribute it to exhaust-side valve seal damage. The summaries come from the NHTSA flat file, so status stays unverified.
    What would change this
Rises if the dipstick is low with no leak and the vehicle is a covered Mazda. Falls if the level is full or a leak is found.
  2. Cause 2: Oil low from a leak or from long service intervals

    Possible — needs testing
    Why it ranks here
The code means low oil, and oil can drop for reasons other than the Mazda seals. Mazda's own bulletin asks to confirm no external leak first.
    What would change this
Rises if there are leaks or drips under the car, or the oil is overdue for service. Falls if the level is normal and nothing is leaking.
  3. Cause 3: Oil level sensor, its wiring or the computer

    Possible — needs testing
    Why it ranks here
TroubleCodes.net lists wiring, the engine oil level sensor and the computer. It is weaker evidence because Mazda's bulletins found the level actually low.
    What would change this
Rises if the dipstick shows a correct level but the warning stays. Falls if the dipstick shows low oil.

What to test first

Start at step 1. Each result tells you what it means and where to go next.

  1. Step 1: On level ground with the engine off for several minutes, check the oil level on the dipstick. Look under the car for fresh oil drips.

    Low riskTool: dipstick, flashlight

  2. Step 2: Ask a Mazda dealer whether your VIN is covered by the valve stem seal special service program (SSPD5) and the oil level bulletins.

    Low risk

Symptoms

  • Low engine oil level warning message with the check engine light
  • Oil needing top-up between changes with no visible leak

How to fix

  1. Step 1: Check the oil on the dipstick with the engine off on level ground, and top up with the oil grade in your owner's manual if it is low.

Warning:Do not overfill past the full mark, and do not drive with the level below the minimum.

  2. Step 2: Ask a Mazda dealer whether your vehicle is covered by the valve stem seal program.
