P1327: Hyundai and Kia: the engine noise monitoring logic has detected piston ring or cylinder wall damage

Piston/cylinder noise detected (Hyundai/Kia)

P1327 in short

On Hyundai and Kia vehicles, P1327 means the engine noise monitoring software, which uses the knock sensor, has detected piston ring or cylinder wall damage. The usual dealer fix is a replacement engine, not a sensor. Treat it as serious: stop driving normally and contact a dealer, since engine campaigns may cover it.

Some Hyundai and Kia engines (the 2.0L Nu engine in the Elantra, Kona and Veloster, and engines in the Soul and Seltos) were found to have piston ring problems that can damage the cylinders. Hyundai and Kia added software that uses the existing knock sensor to listen for the noise that this damage makes.

When the software hears abnormal noise, it stores P1327. On Hyundai the check engine light blinks continuously. Kia's follow-up bulletin says that if P1327 is present after the software update, the engine long block is replaced.

The knock sensor is only the microphone here; replacing it does not fix P1327. Owners report dealers confirming P1327 and replacing the engine, and some report stalling or sudden power loss. Kia also recalled some Soul and Seltos engines (21V-259) for piston oil rings that can cause engine damage, stalling and an oil-fed fire risk; that recall does not name P1327.

Pick your make

P1327 is a manufacturer-specific code: its meaning depends on who built the car.

Other makes: meaning not verified. Check with a scan tool that reads manufacturer definitions.

Most likely causes

  1. Cause 1: Piston ring damage (2020–2021 Kia Soul and Seltos)

    Supported by vehicle data
    Why it ranks here
Kia bulletins give engine replacement instructions for piston ring noise P1327 after the software update, and owners quote the readout.
    What would change this
Rises on a 2020–2021 Soul or Seltos with the PNSS software installed.
  2. Cause 2: Cylinder wall scuffing or engine block noise (2019–2021 Hyundai Elantra, Kona, Veloster 2.0L)

    Supported by vehicle data
    Why it ranks here
Hyundai's campaign software sets P1327 for abnormal cylinder scuffing, and owners report dealers confirming P1327 and replacing the engine.
    What would change this
Rises on a 2.0L Elantra, Kona or Veloster with a blinking check engine light.

What to test first

Start at step 1. Each result tells you what it means and where to go next.

  1. Step 1: Note whether the check engine light is blinking, and whether there is knocking, stalling or power loss. Do not clear the code.

    Low risk

    • IfA Hyundai with a blinking check engine light

It meansThis matches the CNDS warning; contact a dealer.

      Go to step 2

    • IfA Kia Soul or Seltos

It meansKia's piston ring bulletins apply; contact a dealer.

      Go to step 2

  2. Step 2: Have a Hyundai or Kia dealer confirm P1327 and check your VIN for engine campaigns, recalls and warranty extensions.

Symptoms

  • Check engine light blinking continuously Gets more serious: stop and have it checked.
  • Knocking or abnormal noise from the engine Gets more serious: stop and have it checked.
  • Stalling or sudden loss of power Gets more serious: stop and have it checked.

How to fix

We don't give DIY repair steps for a Stop code. Get the car inspected before you drive it; the tests above help you understand what a technician will check.

Parts and cost context

  • Knock sensor:The knock sensor is how the software hears the damage; replacing it does not fix P1327. The documented repair is engine replacement under the maker's campaign.

    Supported by vehicle data

Hyundai 22-01-043H adds CNDS software to the 2.0L Nu engine in the Elantra, Kona and Veloster; P1327 sets with a blinking check engine light when cylinder damage is detected. Owners of 2020 Konas report dealers confirming P1327 and replacing the engine. The bulletin is on NHTSA, but whether it is still current is not verified, so it is labelled vehicle data rather than confirmed.

    Supported by vehicle data

Kia SC209Y gives engine long block replacement instructions when P1327 is present after the PNSS logic update; the 2021 Seltos is also covered. Kia recall 21V-259 for piston oil rings is related context but does not name P1327. The bulletin is on NHTSA, but whether it is still current is not verified, so it is labelled vehicle data rather than confirmed.

  • 2021 · Seltos

    Supported by vehicle data

Owners of 2021 Seltos report P1327 after the PNSS software, and one reports sudden power loss at highway speed with it. This comes from owner complaints to NHTSA that quote a shop or dealer readout, so it is labelled vehicle data rather than confirmed.

P1327 questions

Will a new knock sensor fix P1327?

No. The knock sensor is only how the software hears the damage. Hyundai and Kia treat P1327 as a sign of piston ring or cylinder damage, and Kia's instruction is a replacement engine.
