P0365: Camshaft position sensor B circuit, bank 1: the engine computer sees a missing or faulty signal from the bank 1 exhaust camshaft sensor
Exhaust camshaft position sensor circuit (bank 1)
Severity: Inspect soon
P0365 means the bank 1 exhaust camshaft sensor signal is missing or wrong. The engine usually still runs, but hard starting, rough running and stalling are possible, and on Ford EcoBoost engines it can point at low oil. Have it checked soon.
It gets more serious if:
- Stop: The check engine light starts flashing. That means misfire heavy enough to overheat and damage the catalytic converter; avoid further driving and get it checked.
- Stop: The engine stalls while driving or will not restart. Losing the engine in traffic takes away power assist, so do not keep driving it; have it towed or checked where it stopped.
- Stop: The oil level is well below the minimum or the oil pressure warning comes on. Ford ties P0365 on the 3.5L EcoBoost to low oil level or pressure; running low on oil can ruin the engine.
P0365 in short
P0365 means the engine computer is not getting a good signal from the bank 1 exhaust camshaft sensor. Wiring, the sensor and, on Ford 3.5L EcoBoost engines, low oil level or oil consumption are documented causes. Check the oil level first. Get it inspected soon; stop if it stalls.
Engines with variable cam timing often have a sensor on each camshaft. Camshaft sensor B is the exhaust cam on bank 1, the side with cylinder 1. P0365 is a circuit code: the signal is missing, noisy or out of range.
Ford links P0365 and P0369 on the 3.5L EcoBoost to low oil level, low oil pressure or worn cam phasers, and separately to oil consumption fixed with new valve covers. That makes the dipstick the first check even though it is a sensor code.
Other makers point to wiring: GM found harness shorts at the cam cover on Colorado and Canyon, Ford a harness rubbing on the steering shaft in 2020-2021 Escapes, and Subaru and Scion sensor clearance problems.
Most likely causes
Cause 1: Low oil level or pressure, or worn cam phasers (Ford 3.5L EcoBoost)
Supported by vehicle data- Why it ranks here
- Ford messages say P0365/P0369 on 2018-2019 3.5L EcoBoost engines may come from low oil level, low oil pressure or damaged cam timing units, and to check oil and listen for phaser noise first.
- What would change this
- Rises if the oil is low or the engine rattles at start-up.
Cause 2: Excessive oil consumption from the crankcase ventilation system (Ford 3.5L EcoBoost)
Supported by vehicle data- Why it ranks here
- Ford replaces both valve covers on 2017-2019 F-150 and Expedition 3.5L EcoBoost trucks that use oil with or without P0365/P0369.
- What would change this
- Rises if the truck needs oil topped up between changes with no visible leaks.
Cause 3: Damaged or shorted wiring to the sensor
Supported by vehicle data- Why it ranks here
- GM repairs a harness short at the cam cover on 2015-2022 Colorado/Canyon, and Ford a harness rubbing on the steering shaft on 2020-2021 Escape that drops sensor reference voltage.
- What would change this
- Rises if several sensor codes set at once, fuse 44 is blown on an Escape, or the code comes and goes with steering movement.
Cause 4: Failed exhaust camshaft position sensor or wrong clearance
Common general cause- Why it ranks here
- The sensor itself is a common cause; Subaru and Scion bulletins also cover sensor clearance and inspection on 2011-2013 boxer engines.
- What would change this
- Rises if the signal is missing or weak on a scope with good wiring.
Cause 5: Loose connector or engine computer logic
Possible — needs testing- Why it ranks here
- GM preliminary information for the 2022 Malibu says to cycle the sensor connector and retest; software is listed as a less common cause.
- What would change this
- Rises if the code does not return after reseating the connector.
What to test first
Start at step 1. Each result tells you what it means and where to go next.
Step 1: With the engine off on level ground, check the oil level and note whether the engine has needed oil between changes.
IfOil is low or the engine is using oil
It meansTop up and have oil consumption and oil pressure looked at; on a 3.5L EcoBoost check the Ford bulletins.
Points to: Excessive oil consumption from the crankcase ventilation system (Ford 3.5L EcoBoost)
IfOil is full and not being used
It meansMove on to the wiring.
Step 2: Read all codes; inspect the exhaust cam sensor connector and harness for chafing, oil or loose pins, and reseat the connector.
IfMany unrelated sensor codes are stored (or fuse 44 is blown on a 2020-2021 Escape)
It meansA shared reference voltage or harness short is likely.
IfCode does not return after reseating the connector
It meansA poor connection was the cause.
IfCode returns with good wiring
It meansTest the sensor signal.
Step 3: Have a shop compare the exhaust cam sensor signal with the crank sensor on an oscilloscope and check sensor power and ground.
Warning:Back-probing live sensor circuits needs care; shorting the reference voltage can stall the engine or damage the computer.
IfSignal missing or weak with good power and ground
It meansReplace the sensor or correct its clearance.
Points to: Failed exhaust camshaft position sensor or wrong clearance
IfSignal is good but timing to the crank is off
It meansCheck oil and phasers.
Points to: Low oil level or pressure, or worn cam phasers (Ford 3.5L EcoBoost)
Symptoms
- Check engine light on, sometimes with P0369 or P0366
- Hard starting or long cranking
- Rough running, misfire or brief loss of power
- Stalling or cranks but will not start Gets more serious: stop and have it checked.
- Oil level low or oil pressure warning Gets more serious: stop and have it checked.
Compare with: Check engine light with loss of power, Rough idle with the check engine light on
How to fix
Step 1: Check the oil level and top it up with the grade in your owner's manual.
Warning:Engine off and on level ground; wait a few minutes for oil to drain back.
Step 2: Check that the exhaust camshaft sensor connector is fully latched and the wiring is not rubbed through or oil-soaked, then clear the code and see whether it returns.
Warning:Engine off and cool.
Parts and cost context
- Camshaft position sensor:Rule out low oil, wiring and connector problems before buying a sensor; several bulletins fix P0365 without one.
- Crankcase ventilation (PCV) valve:On 2017-2019 F-150 and Expedition 3.5L EcoBoost, Ford's fix for oil consumption with P0365 is new valve covers with the revised ventilation design.

P0365 questions
Why would a camshaft sensor code have anything to do with oil?
On engines with variable cam timing, low oil can stop the phasers working so the cam signal no longer matches what the computer expects. Ford says to check oil level and phaser noise first on the 3.5L EcoBoost.
