U0418: A module received implausible data from the brake system (ABS) control module
Invalid data received from brake system control module
Severity: Inspect soon
U0418 involves the brake control module, and although Jeep says low battery voltage can set it falsely, brake-related faults need a prompt check.
It gets more serious if:
- Stop: Stop in a safe place if a red brake warning comes on with the ABS light or the brake pedal has no resistance. Honda's manual gives these as stop conditions.
U0418 in short
U0418 means a module received data from the brake (ABS) control module that did not make sense. Low battery voltage and module software are documented causes; a faulty brake module or wiring is possible. Because it involves the brakes, have it checked soon, and stop if a red brake warning appears or the pedal feels wrong.
The brake control module shares wheel speed, brake pressure and stability data with the engine, steering and driver-assist modules. U0418 means it is still sending messages, but one was out of range or did not fit with other data.
Jeep's bulletin for the 2021 Cherokee says U0418 can be set falsely when the battery drops below 10 volts. Chrysler and Jeep released engine computer updates that cover U0418, and Ford's 2020-2022 Escape stored it in the camera module and fixed it with power steering software.
If U0418 comes back with ABS or brake codes and the brake warnings stay on, the brake module itself needs diagnosis by a shop.
Most likely causes
Cause 1: Low battery voltage during starting
Supported by vehicle data- Why it ranks here
- Jeep's 18-078-22 says U0418 can be set erroneously by a low battery (below 10 volts) on the 2021 Cherokee.
- What would change this
- Rises if the battery is weak or the car was slow to crank. Falls if the battery tests good and the code returns.
Cause 2: Engine, steering or brake module software that needs an update
Supported by vehicle data- Why it ranks here
- PCM updates from Jeep (18-078-22, 18-023-19) and Chrysler (18-001-19) list U0418, and Ford's SSM 50771 fixes U0418 in the camera module with power steering software.
- What would change this
- Rises if a dealer finds an update for your VIN. Falls if all modules are current.
Cause 3: Faulty brake system control module
Possible — needs testing- Why it ranks here
- TaT names internal module faults as a typical cause, but none of the bulletins we found ended in a module replacement for U0418.
- What would change this
- Rises if the brake module stores its own internal codes. Falls if voltage and software fixes clear it.
Cause 4: Network wiring, connector or ground fault
Possible — needs testing- Why it ranks here
- Unstable power, ground and CAN faults are general causes of invalid-data codes and are checked once the simpler causes are ruled out.
- What would change this
- Rises if lost-communication codes are also stored. Falls if bus resistance and voltage are normal.
What to test first
Start at step 1. Each result tells you what it means and where to go next.
Step 1: Scan all modules and note which module stored U0418 and what else is set.
IfABS or brake pressure codes are also stored
It meansThe brake module may have its own fault; have a shop diagnose the brakes.
IfU0418 sits in the engine or camera module with no brake codes
It meansCheck the battery and software first.
Step 2: Have the battery and charging system tested.
IfThe battery is weak or drops below 10 volts while cranking
It meansFix the battery, then clear the code and see if it returns.
IfThe battery is healthy
It meansAsk about software updates.
Step 3: Ask a dealer whether your VIN has a bulletin or software update for U0418.
IfAn update applies
It meansHave it installed.
Points to: Engine, steering or brake module software that needs an update
IfNone applies
It meansHave the brake module and network checked.
Step 4: Have a shop check the brake module power, ground and network wiring.
Warning:This is part of the brake system. Do not probe connectors with the ignition on, and avoid yellow airbag connectors. Let a shop do it if unsure.
IfAbout 120 ohms across the bus, a damaged connector or a bad ground
It meansRepair the wiring.
IfWiring is fine and the module stores internal faults
It meansThe brake module may need replacing.
Symptoms
- Check engine light
- ABS or stability warning light
- "Pre-collision Assist Not Available" or cruise control unavailable messages
- Red brake warning or a brake pedal that feels wrong Gets more serious: stop and have it checked.
How to fix
This is a safety-critical system, so we explain the code but don't give repair steps. Have it inspected by a qualified technician.
Parts and cost context
- Brake system control module (ABS module):The brake system control module is usually built onto the ABS hydraulic unit. Replacing it is a shop job and may need programming and a brake bleed. Labor varies; get a quote.
