U0416: A module received implausible data from the stability control (vehicle dynamics) module

Invalid data received from vehicle dynamics control module

U0416 in short

U0416 means a module received data from the stability control (VSA/ESP) module that did not make sense. Common triggers are a battery disconnect or low voltage, module software, or a faulty brake actuator. Because it involves the brake and stability system, have it checked soon, and stop if a red brake warning appears.

The stability control module, often part of the ABS unit, shares data such as wheel speed and brake requests with other modules. U0416 means that module is still talking but one of its messages was out of range or flagged as faulty.

Which module stored the code matters. On Land Rover LR4s the air suspension module stored it; on Honda CR-Vs it showed up in the driver-support system and stopped features like adaptive cruise. Honda's bulletins say a 2017 CR-V stores U0416 every time the battery is disconnected, jumped or replaced.

If U0416 comes back after clearing and the stability or ABS light stays on, the brake actuator itself may be at fault. That diagnosis and repair belong in a shop.

Most likely causes

  1. Cause 1: A recent battery disconnect, jump start or low battery voltage

    Supported by vehicle data
    Why it ranks here
Honda's ATS161223 and A17-064 say the 2017 CR-V stores U0416-68 and U0416-92 whenever the battery is disconnected, jumped or replaced.
    What would change this
Rises if the code appeared right after battery work or a flat battery. Falls if it returns with a healthy battery and no recent battery work.
  2. Cause 2: Software in the stability, radar or engine module that needs an update

    Supported by vehicle data
    Why it ranks here
    Honda's A17-064 radar software update covers U0416 on the 2017 CR-V, a dealer tied U0416-68 to that software on a CR-V, and Jeep's 18-023-19 PCM update lists U0416 on the 2019 Cherokee.
    What would change this
Rises if a dealer finds an update for your VIN. Falls if all modules are on the latest software.
  3. Cause 3: Another electrical device upsetting the network after the ignition is off

    Supported by vehicle data
    Why it ranks here
Land Rover's SSM72146 traces U0416-68 and other U-codes on the 2015 LR4 to the console cooler box staying on after ignition off. This is one model.
    What would change this
Rises if several invalid-data codes set together at start-up. Falls if U0416 is the only code.
  4. Cause 4: Faulty stability control module or brake actuator (VSA modulator)

    Possible — needs testing
    Why it ranks here
TaT names internal module faults as a typical cause, and a Honda dealer replaced a 2014 Accord's VSA modulator after U0416-68 and a VSA solenoid code. It needs testing to confirm.
    What would change this
Rises if ABS or stability codes for the module itself are stored. Falls if the code clears after battery or software fixes.
How to test the brake system control module (abs module)
  5. Cause 5: Network wiring, connector or ground fault corrupting messages

    Possible — needs testing
    Why it ranks here
Power, ground and CAN faults are general causes of invalid-data codes, but no U0416 bulletin we found points to wiring.
    What would change this
Rises if lost-communication codes are also stored. Falls if bus resistance and voltage are normal.

What to test first

Start at step 1. Each result tells you what it means and where to go next.

  1. Step 1: Scan all modules and note which module stored U0416 and every other code present.

Low riskTool: scan tool that reads all modules

    • IfABS, VSA or brake actuator codes are also stored

It meansThe stability module may be reporting its own fault; have a shop diagnose the brake system.

      Go to step 4

    • IfOnly U0416, or it sits with steering angle codes like C0051

It meansCheck whether the battery was recently disconnected and for software bulletins.

      Go to step 2

  2. Step 2: Think back to recent battery work or a flat battery, and have the battery tested.

    Low riskTool: battery tester

  3. Step 3: Ask a dealer whether your VIN has a bulletin or software update covering U0416.

    Low risk

  4. Step 4: Have a shop check the network wiring and the stability control module.

Best left to a shopTool: multimeter, scan tool

Warning:This is part of the brake system. Do not probe connectors with the ignition on, and avoid yellow airbag connectors. Let a shop do it if unsure.

Symptoms

  • VSA, stability or ABS warning light
  • Adaptive cruise or collision-mitigation features unavailable
  • Air suspension or terrain warnings at start-up on some Land Rovers
  • Red brake warning or a brake pedal that feels wrong Gets more serious: stop and have it checked.

How to fix

This is a safety-critical system, so we explain the code but don't give repair steps. Have it inspected by a qualified technician.

Parts and cost context

  • Brake system control module (ABS module):On many cars the stability control module is part of the ABS/brake actuator unit. Replacing it is a shop job and usually needs programming. Labor varies; get a quote.

U0416 questions

Can replacing the battery cause U0416?

Yes on some cars. Honda says the 2017 CR-V stores U0416 whenever the battery is disconnected, jumped or replaced, and a dealer clears it and relearns the steering angle.

Is it safe to drive with U0416?

Have it checked soon, because it involves the stability and brake system. Stop in a safe place if a red brake warning comes on or the pedal feels wrong.
