P2263: Turbo or supercharger boost not matching the computer target (system A)
Turbocharger/supercharger A boost system performance
Severity: Inspect soon
Kelley Blue Book calls the code fairly serious and says not to keep driving, and GM describes reduced engine power with a Service Engine message.
P2263 in short
P2263 means boost from the turbocharger is not matching what the computer asked for. Causes range from snow in the air cleaner (some GM vans), engine computer software on some diesels, a broken wastegate actuator or a boost sensor or leak. Expect reduced power, and have it inspected soon.
The computer compares requested boost with measured boost. P2263 sets when the two do not agree for long enough, either because the turbo is making too little (or too much) or because a sensor or leak is giving a wrong reading.
GM has a bulletin on 2011-2016 Express and Savana vans where snow or ice ingested into the air cleaner restricts the air and sets P2263. Nissan reprograms the engine computer on the 2016 Titan XD, and Ford updates PCM software on 2017 Super Duty. Owners also report a broken wastegate actuator arm on a 2017 Jetta.
The older Ford 6.0L diesel has its own run of bulletins about low power and P2263 with turbo service tips.
Most likely causes
Cause 1: Snow, ice or a restriction in the air intake (GM vans)
Supported by vehicle data- Why it ranks here
- GM PI1164B says snow or ice drawn into the air cleaner housing can restrict airflow and set P2263 with reduced power on 2011-2016 Express and Savana.
- What would change this
- Rises if the air cleaner housing is wet, packed with snow or the filter is blocked. Falls if the intake is clear.
Cause 2: Engine computer software that needs an update (some diesels)
Supported by vehicle data- Why it ranks here
- Nissan NTB16-037 (2016 Titan XD) and Ford TSB 19-2082 (2017 Super Duty) fix P2263 by reprogramming the engine computer.
- What would change this
- Rises if the VIN is covered and the software is not current. Falls if it is current.
Cause 3: Wastegate or turbo actuator fault
Supported by vehicle data- Why it ranks here
- A 2017 Jetta owner reports a broken wastegate actuator arm for P2263, and two Juke owners report the code as a turbo boost system fault. KBB lists the turbo control solenoid and turbo failure.
- What would change this
- Rises if the actuator does not move when commanded. Falls if it moves freely.
Cause 4: Boost or MAP sensor fault or a leak in the boost piping
Common general cause- Why it ranks here
- KBB lists the MAP sensor, brake booster pressure sensor, wiring and a weak battery among the causes.
- What would change this
- Rises if the sensors disagree or smoke shows a leak. Falls if sensors and piping check out.
What to test first
Start at step 1. Each result tells you what it means and where to go next.
Step 1: Read all codes and freeze-frame data. Note any P0299, P0101, P2002 or P2459 stored with P2263.
IfP0299 stored too (underboost)
It meansCheck for a leak or actuator fault.
IfP2263 alone or with other diesel codes
It meansCheck bulletins.
Step 2: Ask a dealer whether your VIN has a software or air intake bulletin for P2263 (GM Express and Savana, Nissan Titan XD, Ford Super Duty, Ram 2500/3500).
IfA bulletin applies
It meansFollow it first.
Points to: Engine computer software that needs an update (some diesels)
IfNo bulletin applies
It meansCheck the intake.
Step 3: With the engine off, check the air cleaner housing and filter for snow, ice, water or a blockage, and look at the boost piping for loose or split hoses.
IfSnow, ice or a blocked filter
It meansClear it and retest.
Points to: Snow, ice or a restriction in the air intake (GM vans)
IfLoose or split hose
It meansRepair it.
Points to: Boost or MAP sensor fault or a leak in the boost piping
IfAll clear
It meansHave the actuator and sensors tested.
Step 4: Have the wastegate or turbo actuator commanded and boost sensors compared on a scan tool.
Warning:Turbo parts and exhaust are hot. Leave this to a shop.
IfActuator does not move
It meansActuator at fault.
IfSensors disagree
It meansSensor or leak suspect.
Points to: Boost or MAP sensor fault or a leak in the boost piping
Symptoms
- Check engine light
- Reduced engine power with a Service Engine message Gets more serious: stop and have it checked.
- Poor acceleration or rough running
Compare with: Check engine light with loss of power
How to fix
Step 1: With the engine off, look for snow, ice or debris in the air cleaner housing.
Step 2: Ask a dealer whether your VIN has an open software bulletin for P2263.
Parts and cost context
- Vacuum hoses and intake leaks:Check boost hoses first; they are the cheapest cause. Labour varies; get a quote.

Can snow cause P2263?
On 2011-2016 Chevrolet Express and GMC Savana vans, GM says snow or ice in the air cleaner housing can restrict airflow and set it.
Is P2263 safe to drive?
Expect reduced power, and KBB advises not to keep driving. Have it inspected soon.
