P2002: Diesel particulate filter not trapping soot well enough (bank 1)

Diesel particulate filter efficiency below threshold, bank 1

Severity: Monitor

PartsAvatar says symptoms can be mild or absent, though performance can fall; it is an emissions fault.

It gets more serious if:

  • Inspect soon: Get it checked soon if power drops or black smoke appears.

P2002 in short

P2002 means the computer judges that the diesel particulate filter on bank 1 is not trapping soot as well as it should. A damaged filter, a faulty back pressure sensor, an exhaust leak or poor fuel are the listed causes. Symptoms can be minor, but reduced power or black smoke means get it checked.

TaT says the computer compares pressure and temperature readings at the filter inlet and outlet to judge its efficiency.

So the code can mean the filter is worn or damaged, or that sensor data misleads the computer.

PartsAvatar also lists exhaust leaks and low-quality diesel, and says some drivers notice nothing.

Most likely causes

These are general causes for this code across vehicles. None is specific to one make or model.

  1. Cause 1: Damaged or worn particulate filter

    Common general cause
    Why it ranks here
Both sources list the filter itself.
    What would change this
Rises if the filter is damaged or readings show it is not trapping. Falls if the filter checks normal.
  2. Cause 2: Back pressure or differential pressure sensor

    Common general cause
    Why it ranks here
PartsAvatar lists the back pressure sensor; TaT says faulty sensor data can mislead the computer.
    What would change this
Rises if sensor readings disagree with expected. Falls if they match.
  3. Cause 3: Exhaust leak or poor fuel

    Possible — needs testing
    Why it ranks here
PartsAvatar lists exhaust leakage and low-quality fuel.
    What would change this
Rises if a leak is found or fuel was suspect. Falls if exhaust is sound.

What to test first

Start at step 1. Each result tells you what it means and where to go next.

  1. Step 1: Read all codes and freeze-frame data and note any other emissions codes.

    Low riskTool: scan tool

  2. Step 2: Have a shop inspect wiring and check the back pressure sensor and filter readings while driving.

Best left to a shopTool: scan tool with live data

Warning:Exhaust parts stay very hot. Let a shop do it.

Symptoms

  • Check engine light
  • Reduced fuel economy
  • Black smoke or reduced power Gets more serious: stop and have it checked.
  • No symptoms at all
