P0757: Shift solenoid B is stuck on or not shifting as commanded
Shift solenoid B stuck on / shift solenoid B performance
Severity: Inspect soon
The code means a shift solenoid is not working as commanded. Ford owners report hard shifts, shuddering, reduced-power messages and, in several cases, stalling or a transmission that would not engage a gear, so the transmission should be checked soon.
It gets more serious if:
- Stop: Stop driving if the car stalls, will not move in drive or reverse, or loses power at speed. Stalling in traffic is a hazard in itself.
P0757 in short
P0757 means the transmission computer found shift solenoid B stuck on or not shifting as commanded. A worn valve body with debris, a failed solenoid or wiring are the usual causes. Expect hard shifts, slipping or limp mode. Drive gently to a shop; stop driving if it stalls or will not engage a gear.
Shift solenoids are small electric valves that route fluid to the clutches so the transmission changes gear. The computer commands solenoid B on and off and checks whether the gear change follows. P0757 is set when solenoid B is reported stuck on, or not acting as commanded.
General Motors and Mazda bulletins in the NHTSA record link this code to slipping, harsh shifts and a delayed 2-3 shift. A General Motors bulletin for 2010-2011 trucks tells technicians to look for debris in the valve body, which can hold a solenoid circuit open or stuck.
On newer Ford 10-speed and 8-speed transmissions, owners report P0757 with other codes such as P073D (unable to engage neutral) and P2701 (friction element). In one case the valve body was replaced and the errors returned. Those reports are owner narratives, not Ford repair data.
Most likely causes
Cause 1: Debris or wear in the valve body holding solenoid B
Supported by vehicle data- Why it ranks here
- General Motors lists debris in the valve body as the thing to look for under this and other shift solenoid codes, and its 2002-2007 truck bulletin covers harsh and delayed shifts with P0757.
- What would change this
- Rises if metal or clutch material is found in the pan or fluid. Falls if the fluid and pan are clean.
Cause 2: Failed shift solenoid or its wiring and connector
Common general cause- Why it ranks here
- The reference says the cause is typically the wiring or the shift solenoid itself.
- What would change this
- Rises if the connector is damaged or solenoid resistance is out of specification. Falls if the circuit tests good.
Cause 3: Internal transmission wear or failure (some Ford models)
Possible — needs testing- Why it ranks here
- Several Ford owners report P0757 with codes for being unable to engage neutral or friction element faults and, in one case, a transmission replacement quote. These are owner narratives.
- What would change this
- Rises if the code returns after a solenoid or valve body repair, or fluid has metal in it. Falls if a simple wiring fault is found.
Cause 4: Transmission control module fault or out-of-date calibration
Possible — needs testing- Why it ranks here
- GM's valve body bulletin also has the technician review the module date code, so the module software is a factor to rule out.
- What would change this
- Rises if a dealer finds an open update. Falls if the module is current and the solenoid circuit is at fault.
What to test first
Start at step 1. Each result tells you what it means and where to go next.
Step 1: Read all codes with a scan tool that can see the transmission module, and note codes stored with P0757 such as other shift solenoid codes.
IfSeveral shift solenoid or friction element codes are stored together
It meansA shared cause such as debris or an internal fault is more likely than a single solenoid.
IfP0757 is stored alone
It meansLook at the wiring and solenoid circuit.
Step 2: Check the transmission fluid level and condition using the owner's manual method. On sealed transmissions have a shop check it.
Warning:Transmission fluid can be very hot and the engine bay has moving parts. Many newer transmissions have no dipstick and must be checked at a set fluid temperature.
IfThe fluid is burnt, low or has metal or debris in it
It meansInternal wear or valve body debris is likely.
Points to: Debris or wear in the valve body holding solenoid B
IfThe fluid looks normal
It meansTest the solenoid circuit.
Step 3: Inspect the transmission connector and harness, and test solenoid B and its circuit against the service information for your vehicle.
Warning:Reaching the connector often means opening the pan area with hot fluid, and probing live circuits can damage the module. Have a shop do it.
IfWiring damage is found or the solenoid is out of specification
It meansSolenoid or wiring fault.
Points to: Failed shift solenoid or its wiring and connector
IfThe circuit tests good
It meansAsk a dealer about internal faults and module updates.
Points to: Internal transmission wear or failure (some Ford models)
Symptoms
- Harsh or delayed shifts, especially 2-3
- Slipping, flare or revs rising between shifts
- Reduced power or powertrain malfunction message
- Transmission stuck in one gear, or will not engage drive or reverse Gets more serious: stop and have it checked.
- Stalling when stopping or when put into reverse Gets more serious: stop and have it checked.
How to fix
Step 1: Read all stored codes with a scan tool that can see the transmission module.
Step 2: Check the transmission fluid level and condition using the owner's manual method.
Warning:Fluid can be hot. If your transmission has no dipstick, leave this to a shop.
Step 3: Ask a dealer whether your VIN has an open transmission bulletin or software update for P0757.

P0757 questions
Is it safe to drive with P0757?
Not for long. A stuck shift solenoid can cause hard shifts, slipping or stalling. If the car runs and shifts, drive gently to a shop; stop if it stalls or will not engage a gear.
Does P0757 mean I need a new transmission?
Not necessarily. Debris in the valve body, a solenoid or wiring can set it. Some Ford owners report the code returning after a valve body repair, so ask for a full diagnosis.
