P2701: Transmission friction element B apply time out of range
Transmission friction element B apply time range/performance
Severity: Inspect soon
Ford bulletins tie P2701 to no upshift past second gear and to lost reverse, 3rd and 5th, so the transmission may be limited in the gears it can use.
P2701 in short
P2701 means clutch pack B in the automatic transmission is taking longer or shorter than expected to apply. Ford bulletins link it to a damaged one-way clutch on the 10R80 and a snap ring or tone wheel failure on the 6F50. Have it checked soon, since the transmission may not upshift.
The computer times how long each clutch takes to apply during a shift. If clutch B is outside the expected time, it sets P2701. The letter depends on the transmission, so a service manual says which clutch it is.
Ford bulletins cover two causes. On 2018 Mustang and later Ford and Lincoln vehicles with the 10R80, a damaged one-way clutch gives no upshift past second gear with P0757 and P2701. On 2015-2016 6F50/6F55 vehicles built in a short window, a snap ring out of position and a damaged direct clutch hub caused lost reverse, 3rd and 5th gear with P0756 and P2701.
Ram has a bulletin for a 2021 Ram 2500 with harsh shift and P2701; the summary does not say what it fixes.
