P0756: Shift solenoid B stuck off or performing poorly

Shift solenoid B performance / stuck off

P0756 in short

P0756 means shift solenoid B, which controls part of the automatic transmission's shifting, seems to be stuck off. Low or dirty fluid is the most common cause, then wiring, the solenoid, the pump or blockages. The car may go into limp mode. Have it inspected soon; driving on risks transmission failure.

Shift solenoids are electric valves that direct fluid to apply the clutches for each gear. P0756 sets when solenoid B does not act as commanded and looks stuck off.

Kelley Blue Book lists low or dirty fluid as the most common cause, followed by frayed wiring, the solenoid or the pump, and blockages. A control module failure is rare. Typical signs are limp mode, harsh or erratic shifts and getting stuck in a gear.

Bulletins show the code can also come from deeper problems: GM has an information bulletin for 4L60E and 4L65E transmissions with P0756 for 2-3 shift valve performance, and Ford covers a 2015-2016 6F50/6F55 snap ring and hub failure with P0756 among the codes.

Most likely causes

  1. Cause 1: Low or dirty transmission fluid

    Common general cause
    Why it ranks here
Kelley Blue Book says this is the most common cause.
    What would change this
Rises if fluid is low or dark. Falls if normal.
  2. Cause 2: Frayed or damaged wiring

    Common general cause
    Why it ranks here
Kelley Blue Book lists wiring damage and suggests inspecting it after fluid.
    What would change this
Rises if the harness is chafed or connectors are corroded. Falls if intact.
  3. Cause 3: Shift solenoid, valve body or pump problem

    Common general cause
    Why it ranks here
Kelley Blue Book lists solenoid, pump and blockage problems once fluid and wiring are ruled out; GM describes a 2-3 shift valve performance issue on 4L60E and 4L65E.
    What would change this
Rises if fluid is clean and wiring good but the code returns. Falls if a fluid service clears it.
  4. Cause 4: Direct clutch snap ring or hub failure (some 2015-2016 Ford/Lincoln 6F50/6F55)

    Supported by vehicle data
    Why it ranks here
Ford SSM 46069 covers lost reverse, 3rd and 5th gear with P0756 and/or P2701 on vehicles built in a short window.
    What would change this
Rises on a covered build date. Falls on other vehicles.

What to test first

Start at step 1. Each result tells you what it means and where to go next.

  1. Step 1: Check the transmission fluid level and condition by the method in the owner's manual. Many transmissions have no dipstick; leave those to a shop.

Use cautionTool: transmission dipstick, if fitted

Warning:Run the check only as the owner's manual describes; the transmission is hot and has moving parts nearby.

  2. Step 2: Ask a dealer whether your VIN has a bulletin for P0756.

    Low risk

  3. Step 3: Have a shop inspect the wiring, check solenoid B operation and the valve body.

    Best left to a shop

Warning:Transmission work involves hot fluid and heavy, moving parts; leave this to a shop.

Symptoms

  • Check engine light
  • Harsh or erratic shifts, stuck in a gear or limp mode Gets more serious: stop and have it checked.
  • Slipping in or out of gear
  • Poor fuel economy

How to fix

  1. Step 1: Ask a dealer whether your VIN has an open bulletin for P0756.
