P0721: Transmission output shaft speed sensor signal out of its expected range

Output speed sensor range/performance

P0721 in short

P0721 means the output shaft speed sensor is sending a signal, but it does not make sense compared with what the transmission computer expects. The sensor, its wiring or an internal wiring frame is the usual fault, and several makers have bulletins. Have it inspected soon, and check for a recall or bulletin first.

The output speed sensor reads how fast the transmission output shaft turns, which is close to road speed. The computer uses it to pick gears and often to drive the speedometer. P0721 sets when the signal is present but erratic or out of range compared with other speed readings.

An erratic output signal can make the transmission think the vehicle has slowed, so it may downshift hard, refuse to upshift or drop the speedometer to zero. Owners of 2011–2014 F-150s with the 6R80 report exactly this with P0721, often alongside P0720.

Bulletins exist for 2018 Ford 10R80 vehicles, 2010–2012 Hyundais (which tells technicians not to replace the transmission for this code) and 2001–2004 GM trucks with the Allison LCT1000. A VIN check for recalls and bulletins is the cheapest first step.

Most likely causes

  1. Cause 1: Output speed sensor in the internal wiring frame (2011–2014 F-150, 6R80)

    Supported by vehicle data
    Why it ranks here
Many F-150 owners report P0721, often with P0720, together with sudden downshifts and a dead speedometer, and point to the output shaft speed sensor and molded leadframe.
    What would change this
Rises on a 2011–2014 F-150 with P0720 or P0722 also stored and the speedometer dropping out.
  2. Cause 2: Faulty output speed sensor

    Common general cause
    Why it ranks here
Speed sensors are external inputs the computer checks, and a failing one gives the sudden downshifts and missed upshifts that go with this code.
    What would change this
Rises if the output speed reading jumps on a scan tool while road speed is steady.
  3. Cause 3: Damaged wiring or corroded connector in the sensor circuit

    Common general cause
    Why it ranks here
Pinched wiring and connector corrosion are checked first on any speed sensor circuit.
    What would change this
Rises if moving the harness changes the reading or corrosion is found.
  4. Cause 4: Ford 10R80 bulletin condition (2018 F-150, Expedition, Mustang, Navigator)

    Supported by vehicle data
    Why it ranks here
Ford has a bulletin for P0721 on 10R80 vehicles built on or before 30 November 2017.
    What would change this
Rises on an early-build 2018 10R80 vehicle with P0721 alone.
  5. Cause 6: Shared speed signal fault (2001–2004 GM trucks with Allison LCT1000)

    Supported by vehicle data
    Why it ranks here
GM ties P0721 with ABS code C0237, no shift and an erratic speedometer on these trucks.
    What would change this
Rises if the ABS light is also on and C0237 is stored.

What to test first

Start at step 1. Each result tells you what it means and where to go next.

  1. Step 1: Read codes from the engine, transmission and ABS modules before anything is cleared.

Low riskTool: scan tool that reads the transmission module

  2. Step 2: Check for open recalls and P0721 bulletins for your VIN at a dealer or on the NHTSA site.

    Low risk

  3. Step 3: Have a shop compare output speed with wheel speed on a scan tool during a road test, then check the sensor connector and wiring.

Best left to a shopTool: scan tool with transmission data

Warning:Shop test. Watching live data while driving needs a second person, and wiring checks follow the maker's procedure.

Symptoms

  • Check engine light, often with a wrench light on Fords
  • Speedometer drops to zero or reads erratically
  • Harsh shifts or no upshift
  • Sudden downshift into a low gear at speed Gets more serious: stop and have it checked.
  • Transmission stuck in one gear or reduced power (limp-home mode) Gets more serious: stop and have it checked.

How to fix

  1. Step 1: Do not clear the code before the transmission module has been read.

  2. Step 2: Ask a dealer whether your VIN has an open recall, program or P0721 bulletin. Ford, Hyundai and GM have issued them.

Parts and cost context

  • Transmission control module (TCM):Do not replace the transmission or its computer for P0721 unless a test points to it. Hyundai specifically says not to replace the transmission for this code.

Ford

  • 2011–2014 · F-150

    Supported by vehicle data

Owners report P0721, often with P0720, together with sudden downshifts to first, a dead speedometer and the wrench light. Ford recalled 2011–2013 F-150s (19V-075) for unexpected downshifts into first with a software fix, but that recall does not name P0721. This comes from owner complaints to NHTSA that quote a shop or dealer readout, so it is labelled vehicle data rather than confirmed.

P0721 questions

Why did my speedometer stop working with P0721?

On many vehicles the output speed sensor also feeds the speedometer, so an erratic signal can drop it to zero at the same time the transmission shifts oddly.

Was my F-150 fixed by the downshift recall?

Recall 19V-075 updated software on 2011–2013 F-150s to address unexpected downshifts into first, but it does not name P0721. Owners still report P0721 after the recall, so the sensor and its wiring frame may need testing.
