P0717: No signal from the transmission input or turbine speed sensor

Input/turbine speed sensor no signal

P0717 in short

P0717 means the transmission computer gets no signal from the input or turbine shaft speed sensor. A failed sensor or wiring is common, but some bulletins trace it to clutch damage inside the transmission. Have it inspected soon, and check for a bulletin before replacing parts.

The input or turbine speed sensor reads how fast the shaft coming out of the torque converter turns. The computer compares it with engine and output speed to judge converter slip and confirm each gear. P0717 sets when it expects pulses from this sensor and gets none.

Often the sensor or its circuit has failed. Ford replaces the turbine shaft speed sensor on some 2020 Super Duty trucks, and GM checks a circuit at the transmission connector on some 2013 trucks and vans.

The code can also come from damage inside the transmission. On some 2016 GM crossovers and sedans and some 2015–2016 Ford 6F transmissions, a failed clutch assembly breaks the sensor reading and the car loses reverse and some forward gears. A bulletin check by VIN comes first.

Most likely causes

  1. Cause 1: Faulty input/turbine speed sensor, connector or wiring

    Common general cause
    Why it ranks here
A dead sensor or open circuit gives no signal, and Ford replaces this sensor for P0717 on some Super Duty trucks.
    What would change this
Rises if the reading stays at zero on a scan tool while the engine runs in gear, or wiring damage is found.
  2. Cause 2: Sensor circuit fault at the transmission connector (2013 GM trucks and vans)

    Supported by vehicle data
    Why it ranks here
GM tells technicians to check circuit 1984 at the 20-way transmission connector for P0716 or P0717 with harsh shifts.
    What would change this
Rises on a 2013 Silverado, Sierra, Express or Savana with harsh shifts.
  3. Cause 3: Internal clutch damage disturbing the sensor reading (2016 GM, 2015–2016 Ford 6F)

    Supported by vehicle data
    Why it ranks here
GM and Ford bulletins pair P0717 with no reverse and missing gears and fix it inside the transmission, not at the sensor.
    What would change this
Rises if reverse, third or fifth gear is missing.
  4. Cause 4: Transmission computer reporting error (2008 Caliber, Compass, Patriot)

    Supported by vehicle data
    Why it ranks here
Chrysler issued a software flash because these vehicles could report the wrong code for an input speed fault.
    What would change this
Rises on a covered 2008 Dodge or Jeep that has not had the flash.

What to test first

Start at step 1. Each result tells you what it means and where to go next.

  1. Step 1: Read codes from the engine and transmission modules with a scan tool that supports both, before anything is cleared.

Low riskTool: scan tool that reads the transmission module

      Go to step 2

  2. Step 2: Check for a P0717 bulletin for your VIN at a dealer or on the NHTSA site.

    Low risk

  3. Step 3: Have a shop watch the input speed reading on a scan tool in gear, then test the sensor connector and wiring.

Best left to a shopTool: scan tool with transmission data

Warning:Shop test. The vehicle must be in gear with the engine running, and wiring checks follow the maker's procedure.

Symptoms

  • Check engine light, sometimes with a wrench light on Fords
  • Harsh shifts
  • Lack of power on some Ford Super Duty trucks
  • No reverse, third or fifth gear on some GM and Ford models Gets more serious: stop and have it checked.
  • Transmission stuck in one gear or reduced power (limp-home mode) Gets more serious: stop and have it checked.

How to fix

  1. Step 1: Do not clear the code before the transmission module has been read.

  2. Step 2: Ask a dealer whether your VIN has an open P0717 bulletin. Ford, GM, Hyundai and Chrysler have issued them.

Parts and cost context

  • Transmission control module (TCM):Do not replace the transmission computer for P0717 unless a test points to it. Hyundai warns against replacing the transmission for its speed sensor codes, and most fixes are the sensor, its wiring or internal clutch parts.

P0717 questions

Is P0717 just a bad sensor?

Often, but not always. Some GM and Ford bulletins trace it to clutch damage inside the transmission, especially when reverse or some gears are missing. Check for a bulletin before buying a sensor.
