P0715: Transmission input or turbine shaft speed sensor circuit fault

Input/turbine speed sensor circuit

P0715 in short

P0715 means the transmission computer is not getting a usable signal from the input (turbine) shaft speed sensor. The sensor, its wiring or an internal wiring frame is the usual fault, but some makers fix it with software or internal repairs. Have it inspected soon, and check for a recall or bulletin first.

The input or turbine speed sensor reads how fast the shaft coming out of the torque converter turns. The transmission computer compares it with engine and output speed to choose gears, time shifts and check for slipping. When the signal is missing, erratic or implausible, it sets P0715.

Without that signal the transmission may shift harshly, stay in one gear or drop into a backup (limp) mode. On Ford 6R80 transmissions the sensor sits on a molded wiring frame inside the transmission, and owners of 2015–2017 F-150s and a 2018 Transit report dealers finding that frame at fault.

Other fixes are vehicle-specific. Ford has bulletins for 2015–2016 Edge, Explorer, Flex and Taurus (an internal clutch and tone wheel) and for 2020 Super Duty trucks, and Nissan has one for the 2022 Pathfinder. A VIN check for recalls and bulletins is the cheapest first step.

Most likely causes

  1. Cause 1: Turbine speed sensor in the internal wiring frame (Ford 6R80: 2015–2017 F-150, Transit)

    Supported by vehicle data
    Why it ranks here
Owners quote Ford dealers confirming a turbine speed sensor or molded leadframe failure with P0715 and P0717 on these 6R80 vehicles.
    What would change this
Rises on a 6R80-equipped F-150 or Transit with P0717 also stored, a wrench light and limp mode.
  2. Cause 2: Faulty input/turbine speed sensor

    Common general cause
    Why it ranks here
The sensor itself is the first cause trade references list, and failed speed sensors give the harsh, missing or sudden shifts that go with this code.
    What would change this
Rises if the input speed reading drops out on a scan tool while engine speed stays steady.
  3. Cause 3: Damaged wiring or corroded connector in the sensor circuit

    Common general cause
    Why it ranks here
Speed sensor circuits are checked for power, ground, pinched wiring and connector corrosion before parts are replaced.
    What would change this
Rises if wiggling the harness changes the reading or corrosion is found at the connector.
  4. Cause 4: Direct clutch cylinder or tone wheel (2015–2016 Ford 6F50/6F55)

    Supported by vehicle data
    Why it ranks here
Ford lists P0715 with no reverse, 3rd and 5th gear on some early-2016 builds and points at the direct clutch cylinder and tone wheel the sensor reads.
    What would change this
Rises on a 2015–2016 Edge, Explorer, Flex or Taurus built between November 2015 and February 2016 with no reverse.
  5. Cause 5: Transmission computer software (2020 Ford Super Duty 10R140, 2022 Nissan Pathfinder)

    Supported by vehicle data
    Why it ranks here
Ford and Nissan have bulletins for P0715 on these vehicles that send them to the dealer rather than straight to a sensor.
    What would change this
Rises on these models when P0715 is the only code and the sensor tests good.
How to test the transmission control module (tcm)

What to test first

Start at step 1. Each result tells you what it means and where to go next.

  1. Step 1: Read codes from the engine and transmission modules with a scan tool that supports both, before anything is cleared.

Low riskTool: scan tool that reads the transmission module

  2. Step 2: Check for open recalls and P0715 bulletins for your VIN at a dealer or on the NHTSA site.

    Low risk

  3. Step 3: Have a shop watch input and engine speed on a scan tool during a road test, then check the sensor connector and wiring.

Best left to a shopTool: scan tool with transmission data

Warning:Shop test. Watching live data while driving needs a second person, and wiring checks follow the maker's procedure.

Symptoms

  • Check engine light, often with a wrench light on Fords
  • Harsh or erratic shifting
  • Sudden downshift into a low gear at speed Gets more serious: stop and have it checked.
  • Transmission stuck in one gear or reduced power (limp-home mode) Gets more serious: stop and have it checked.

How to fix

  1. Step 1: Do not clear the code before the transmission module has been read.

  2. Step 2: Ask a dealer whether your VIN has an open recall, program or P0715 bulletin. Ford and Nissan have issued them.

Parts and cost context

  • Transmission control module (TCM):Do not replace the transmission computer for P0715 unless a test points to it. The usual fixes are the sensor, its wiring or internal wiring frame, or a bulletin repair.

Labor varies by vehicle and shop; get a quote before you approve a repair.

Ford

  • 2015–2017 · F-150

    Supported by vehicle data

Owners report P0715 and P0717 with a wrench light, limp mode or sudden downshifts, and a Ford dealer confirmed a turbine speed sensor fault on one truck. Ford recalled these years for unintended downshifts from the transmission wiring frame (26V-237), though the recall does not name P0715. This comes from owner complaints to NHTSA that quote a shop or dealer readout, so it is labelled vehicle data rather than confirmed.

P0715 questions

Is it safe to drive with P0715?

Have it inspected soon. If the transmission suddenly drops into a low gear at speed or the wheels lock, pull over and get it towed or checked before driving on.

Is the speed sensor always the problem?

No. On Ford 6R80 trucks the sensor is part of an internal wiring frame, and some Ford and Nissan bulletins point to software or internal parts. Check for a bulletin before buying a sensor.
