P0460: Fuel level sensor circuit fault

Fuel level sensor A circuit malfunction

Severity: Monitor

A fuel level circuit fault mainly makes the fuel gauge unreliable, and Ford's old bulletins treat it as stored in memory without driveability concerns, though KBB advises against relying on the car because you could run out of fuel.

It gets more serious if:

  • Inspect soon: Inspect soon if the engine stalls or hesitates, since KBB lists those as possible symptoms, or if you can no longer tell how much fuel is in the tank.

P0460 in short

P0460 means the computer sees a fault in the fuel level sensor circuit, so the fuel gauge may read wrong or jump around. Causes include wiring, a worn sender in the tank, and corroded terminals. It is usually not urgent, but you could run out of fuel. Fill up by the odometer and get it checked.

The fuel level sender in the tank sends a signal that the computer uses for the gauge and for some self-tests. If the signal is outside the expected range, the computer sets P0460.

KBB lists damaged wiring or connectors, a faulty sender, corroded terminals, a faulty computer or instrument cluster and a damaged pump module. Symptoms are an inaccurate or jumping gauge and the check engine light, with stalling or hesitation reported less often.

Ford has bulletins from the late 1990s and early 2000s for P0460 stored in memory on the Contour, Windstar and others, some with no driveability concerns.

Most likely causes

  1. Cause 1: Damaged or corroded wiring or connectors at the sender

    Common general cause
    Why it ranks here
KBB lists wiring, connectors and corroded terminals first.
    What would change this
Rises if the gauge jumps over bumps or after a tank service. Falls if the circuit tests good.
  2. Cause 2: Worn fuel level sender or pump module

    Common general cause
    Why it ranks here
KBB lists a faulty sender and a damaged pump module.
    What would change this
Rises if sender resistance does not change smoothly as the float moves. Falls if it does.
How to test the fuel level sensor (sending unit)
  3. Cause 3: Code stored without a real fault (some Fords)

    Supported by vehicle data
    Why it ranks here
Ford bulletins for the Contour and Windstar cover P0460 stored in continuous memory, some with no driveability concerns.
    What would change this
Rises if the car is one of those models and the gauge is accurate. Falls if the gauge is wrong.
  4. Cause 4: Instrument cluster or engine computer fault

    Possible — needs testing
    Why it ranks here
KBB lists these but they are less common than sender or wiring faults.
    What would change this
Rises only after the sender circuit tests good.

What to test first

Start at step 1. Each result tells you what it means and where to go next.

  1. Step 1: Note how the fuel gauge behaves (jumping, stuck or accurate) and read the stored codes.

    Low riskTool: OBD-II scan tool

  2. Step 2: Have a technician check the sender connector, ground and wiring, and the sender's resistance as the float moves.

Best left to a shopTool: multimeter, service manual

Warning:The sender is inside the fuel tank. Do not open the fuel system yourself; fuel vapor is flammable.

Symptoms

  • Fuel gauge jumps, sticks or reads wrong
  • Check engine light
  • Unexpected low fuel warnings
  • Hesitation or stalling Gets more serious: stop and have it checked.

How to fix

  1. Step 1: Track mileage since the last fill-up so you do not rely on the gauge.

P0460 questions

Can P0460 make the car run out of fuel?

The code does not stop the car, but the gauge may be wrong. Track mileage between fill-ups until it is fixed.
