P0462: The fuel level sensor signal is lower than its normal range

Fuel level sensor A circuit low

Severity: Monitor

This code affects the fuel gauge and some emissions tests, not how the engine runs. TroubleCodes.net rates it moderate because the real risk is running out of fuel while the gauge still shows some, so keep track of mileage and get it fixed when convenient.

It gets more serious if:

  • Inspect soon: Get it inspected soon if the fuel gauge becomes erratic, sticks, or reads empty or full regardless of the real level, because you could run out of fuel without warning. Track your mileage between fill-ups until it's fixed.

P0462 in short

P0462 means the fuel level sensor signal is reading lower than its normal range, usually from a worn or failed sender in the tank, a wire shorted to ground, or a connector fault. The engine runs normally, but the gauge may be wrong or read empty. Track mileage between fill-ups so you don't run out.

A float in the tank moves a variable resistor, the fuel level sender. The engine computer or instrument cluster reads its voltage to drive the gauge and to decide when to run some emissions tests that need a known fuel level.

P0462 sets when that voltage stays below its valid range. Saab's 9-3 sets it below 0.25 volts for 50 seconds and describes it as a short to ground; on the GM-based 9-4X the gauge then defaults to empty and the low fuel light comes on.

Bulletins point mostly at senders: Nissan replaced fuel level sending units on several trucks and the Sentra, GM has a Corvette fix for erratic or empty readings, and Mazda found a faulty sub-tank sender could leave a CX-90 out of fuel with the gauge showing some.

Most likely causes

  1. Cause 1: Worn or failed fuel level sender in the tank

    Common general cause
    Why it ranks here
Nissan, GM and Mazda bulletins replace or repair the sender for this code.
    What would change this
Likelier if sender resistance jumps or drops to near zero as the float moves.
How to test the fuel level sensor (sending unit)
  2. Cause 2: Signal wire shorted to ground or damaged connector

    Common general cause
    Why it ranks here
Saab describes P0462 as a short to ground, and TroubleCodes.net lists burnt, chafed or corroded wiring and connectors.
    What would change this
Likelier if the reading changes when the harness near the tank is moved.
  3. Cause 3: Aftermarket accessory wiring tapped into the circuit

    Supported by vehicle data
    Why it ranks here
Ford traced P0462 on several 2003-2004 models to an improperly installed remote start.
    What would change this
Likelier if a remote start or other accessory has been fitted.
  4. Cause 4: Float stuck or tank damage stopping the arm moving

    Possible — needs testing
    Why it ranks here
TroubleCodes.net and AA1Car list a damaged tank or binding float arm.
    What would change this
Likelier after the tank has been hit or dented.
How to test the fuel level sensor (sending unit)
  5. Cause 5: Instrument cluster or control module fault

    Possible — needs testing
    Why it ranks here
TroubleCodes.net rates a computer fault as rare; Nissan and Infiniti say the sensor can be replaced separately from the pump, so diagnose before replacing large assemblies.
    What would change this
Only after sender and wiring test good.

What to test first

Start at step 1. Each result tells you what it means and where to go next.

  1. Step 1: Read all codes and compare the fuel level reading in live data with the real level after filling the tank

    Low riskTool: OBD-II scan tool

  2. Step 2: With the ignition off, unplug the sender connector at the tank, then switch on and watch the gauge or live reading

    Use cautionTool: Scan tool

Warning:Work in a ventilated area with no sparks or flames nearby; the sender connector is close to the fuel tank.

  3. Step 3: Measure sender resistance through its travel and check reference voltage, ground and the signal circuit against the service manual

Best left to a shopTool: Digital multimeter

Warning:Removing a sender means opening the fuel tank; fuel vapour is flammable. This is a job for a shop.

Symptoms

  • Check engine light
  • Fuel gauge reads empty, wrong or erratic Gets more serious: stop and have it checked.
  • Low fuel warning on with fuel in the tank
  • Engine stops or won't start while the gauge still shows fuel Gets more serious: stop and have it checked.

How to fix

  1. Step 1: Ask a dealer to check your VIN for bulletins or extended coverage; Nissan, Infiniti, GM, Mazda and Ford have published fixes for fuel gauge codes.

  2. Step 2: Until it's fixed, refuel by distance driven rather than by the gauge.

Parts and cost context

  • Fuel level sensor (sending unit):Some senders are part of the fuel pump module and some are sold separately; Nissan and Infiniti note the sensor can be replaced without the whole pump assembly. Labour varies; get a quote.

P0462 questions

Is it safe to drive with a fuel level sensor code?

The engine itself isn't affected, but the gauge can't be trusted. Fill up by distance driven rather than by the gauge, keep the tank above a quarter, and get it repaired before a long trip.
