P0463: The fuel level sensor signal is higher than its normal range

Fuel level sensor circuit high

Severity: Monitor

This code affects the fuel gauge and some emissions checks, not how the engine runs. The real risk is a gauge you can't trust, so watch your mileage between fill-ups and get it fixed when convenient.

It gets more serious if:

  • Inspect soon: Get it inspected soon if the fuel gauge becomes erratic, sticks, or reads empty or full regardless of the real level, because you could run out of fuel without warning. Track your mileage between fill-ups until it's fixed.

P0463 in short

P0463 means the fuel level sensor signal is reading higher than its normal range, usually from a failing sender in the tank, an open circuit or a poor connection. The engine runs normally, but the fuel gauge may be wrong or erratic. Track mileage between fill-ups so you don't run out, and get it repaired.

A float in the fuel tank moves a variable resistor (the sending unit) as the level changes. The instrument cluster or engine computer reads the resulting signal to drive the fuel gauge, and the engine computer also uses fuel level when it runs some emissions tests.

P0463 sets when that signal sits above its normal range. On many cars an open circuit or worn resistor track gives a high reading, which is why the gauge can stick, jump around or read empty with a full tank. Resistance ranges differ by maker: older Ford and Chrysler senders read about 73 ohms empty, GM about 0 ohms.

Bulletins show a mix of worn senders, contamination and wiring: Nissan replaced senders on many trucks and SUVs, Ford found sulfur buildup on some sensors, and GM found poor terminal tension at a connector.

Most likely causes

  1. Cause 1: Worn or failed fuel level sending unit

    Common general cause
    Why it ranks here
Nissan, Ford and GM bulletins replace the sender for this code.
    What would change this
Likelier if resistance at the sender jumps or goes open as the float moves.
How to test the fuel level sensor (sending unit)
  2. Cause 2: Open circuit or poor terminal contact in the sender wiring

    Common general cause
    Why it ranks here
An open or high-resistance circuit reads high; GM traced P0463 to poor terminal tension at a connector.
    What would change this
Likelier if the reading changes when connectors are moved.
  3. Cause 3: Sulfur or fuel deposits on the sensor contacts

    Supported by vehicle data
    Why it ranks here
Ford found sulfur buildup on the fuel level sensor on some 2004-2006 vehicles and treated it with a fuel system cleaner.
    What would change this
Likelier on vehicles covered by that bulletin with an erratic rather than dead gauge.
How to test the fuel level sensor (sending unit)
  4. Cause 4: Stuck float arm, leaking float or damaged tank

    Possible — needs testing
    Why it ranks here
A binding arm or tank damage stops the float following the fuel.
    What would change this
Likelier after tank damage or if the reading never changes.

What to test first

Start at step 1. Each result tells you what it means and where to go next.

  1. Step 1: Read codes and compare the fuel level reading in live data with the gauge and the actual amount of fuel added at a fill-up

    Low riskTool: OBD-II scan tool

  2. Step 2: Measure sender resistance at its connector and check the wiring to the cluster or computer against the service manual's range

Best left to a shopTool: Digital multimeter

Warning:The sender connector is at or in the fuel tank; work away from sparks and flames and don't open the tank or pump module without the proper procedure and ventilation.

Symptoms

  • Check engine light with no change in how the engine runs
  • Fuel gauge reads empty, full or erratic regardless of real level Gets more serious: stop and have it checked.
  • Low fuel warning on with a full tank

How to fix

  1. Step 1: Until it's fixed, reset the trip meter at each fill-up and refuel by distance rather than the gauge.

  2. Step 2: Ask a dealer whether a bulletin covers your vehicle; Nissan, for example, allows the level sensor to be replaced without the whole pump on many models.

Parts and cost context

  • Fuel level sensor (sending unit):On many vehicles the sender is part of the in-tank fuel pump module; some makers, such as Nissan, sell the level sensor separately. Labour varies; get a quote.

P0463 questions

Can I drive with P0463?

Yes, the engine isn't affected. Just don't trust the fuel gauge: reset the trip meter at each fill-up and refuel by distance until it's repaired.

Do I need a whole new fuel pump for P0463?

Not always. On many cars the sender is part of the pump module, but some makers, Nissan included, sell the level sensor separately, and some cases are wiring.
