U0423: A module received invalid data from the instrument panel control module

Invalid data received from instrument panel control module

Severity: Severity not verified — if the car runs badly, have it inspected

The sources show U0423 sets with cosmetic warnings on some cars and with a blank cluster and engine stop on others, so the code alone does not fix how serious it is.

It gets more serious if:

  • Inspect soon: Inspect soon if the instrument cluster goes blank or fluctuates, the engine stops, or several warning lights come on together.

U0423 in short

U0423 usually means a module got data from the instrument cluster that did not make sense. It is often a software or communication glitch, and on some Mazda and Honda models a software update fixes it. Have it checked soon if the cluster blanks, the engine stops or many warnings appear together.

The instrument cluster sends data to other modules over the network. When a receiving module decides the data is invalid, it stores U0423. The code names the data that failed a check, not necessarily a broken cluster.

Mazda and Honda bulletins describe it with other codes on models with Mazda Connect and on the 2017 CR-V with an Auto High Beam message. A Jeep Compass owner saw it with an A/C that stopped working after service, and a Taurus owner had a blank cluster and an engine stop with U0423:82 stored.

Not every maker uses the code for the same sending module: an FCA bulletin for the Dodge Hornet describes U0423-87 as invalid data from the telematic box module, and the code can set erroneously.

Most likely causes

  1. Cause 1: Module software that needs an update or reflash

    Supported by vehicle data
    Why it ranks here
Mazda MT-010-18, Honda ATS171001 and FCA S2308000099 are bulletins on specific vehicles that name U0423 with a software or diagnostic remedy.
    What would change this
Rises on the listed models and years. Falls on other vehicles.
  2. Cause 2: Instrument cluster fault or power loss

    Supported by vehicle data
    Why it ranks here
A Taurus owner had a cluster go black with the code stored, and a Compass owner saw invalid cluster data with the code.
    What would change this
Rises when the cluster flickers, blanks or resets. Falls if gauges behave normally.
  3. Cause 3: Low voltage or a network fault that corrupts messages

    Possible — needs testing
    Why it ranks here
FCA says that multiple lost-communication codes can follow a battery or TCM fault, but U0423 itself is only one of the listed codes.
    What would change this
Rises when many modules log faults together. Falls if only U0423 is stored.

What to test first

Start at step 1. Each result tells you what it means and where to go next.

  1. Step 1: Read all modules and note whether other lost-communication or cluster codes are stored with U0423, and whether the cluster flickers or resets.

Low riskTool: scan tool that reads all modules

  2. Step 2: Check battery condition and charging, then ask a technician to test the cluster power, ground and network wiring.

Use cautionTool: multimeter and scan tool

Warning:Disconnect the battery before touching module connectors. Do not probe airbag circuits.

Symptoms

  • Auto High Beam or driver-information message
  • Cluster goes blank or resets Gets more serious: stop and have it checked.
  • Engine stops while driving Gets more serious: stop and have it checked.
  • TPMS, traction or stability lights stay on

How to fix

  1. Step 1: Check that the battery is healthy, then clear the codes and see if U0423 returns.

  2. Step 2: Ask a dealer whether a software bulletin exists for your exact vehicle.
