P2817: Pressure control solenoid H performance or stuck off fault in an automatic transmission
P2817 pressure control solenoid H stuck off
Severity: Severity not verified — if the car runs badly, have it inspected
Honda says the D light flashes and GM trucks go into limp mode with this code, but we found no source on how long it is safe to drive.
It gets more serious if:
- Inspect soon: The D light flashes, the transmission shifts harshly or goes into limp mode.
P2817 in short
P2817 means the transmission computer found pressure control solenoid H stuck off or not performing. Honda traced it on some 2016-2019 cars to software misreading pressure, GM found a damaged turbine shaft seal on some 2024-2025 SUVs, and owners of GM trucks report valve body failure. Get it checked soon.
Pressure control solenoids regulate fluid pressure to the clutches. The transmission computer sets P2817 when solenoid H does not do what it was commanded to, called performance or stuck off.
The cause depends on the make. A Honda bulletin says the computer misread drive pulley pressure as high, which set the code and flashed the D light. A GM preliminary bulletin says a damaged turbine shaft seal can cause it.
Owners of 2020-2021 GM trucks report limp mode with P2817 and a valve body failure, and one Toyota owner lists it with other pressure solenoid codes.
Most likely causes
Cause 1: Pressure misread by the transmission computer (some 2016-2019 Honda CVTs)
Supported by vehicle data- Why it ranks here
- Honda A19-047 says the TCM misreads pulley pressure as high; only the summary was read.
- What would change this
- Rises if the Honda D light flashes with this code and the software is not current. Falls if the update is done.
Cause 2: Damaged turbine shaft seal (some 2024-2025 GM SUVs)
Supported by vehicle data- Why it ranks here
- GM preliminary information PIP6005 names a damaged turbine shaft seal as a possible cause; only the summary was read.
- What would change this
- Rises if a dealer finds seal damage. Falls if the seal is intact.
Cause 3: Solenoid or valve body failure
Possible — needs testing- Why it ranks here
- Owners of GM trucks report a valve body failure with P2817; these are owner accounts.
- What would change this
- Rises if tests show the solenoid does not respond. Falls if software or the seal fixes it.
What to test first
Start at step 1. Each result tells you what it means and where to go next.
Step 1: Read all codes and note whether P0700 or other pressure solenoid codes such as P2714 are stored with P2817.
IfOther pressure solenoid codes are stored
It meansThe valve body may have more than one solenoid fault; ask a shop to test.
IfP2817 alone on a covered Honda or GM
It meansAsk about the bulletin.
Step 2: Ask a dealer whether a bulletin or software update applies to your VIN, and have solenoid H response tested.
Warning:Seal and valve body checks need the transmission opened; leave it to a shop.
IfHonda bulletin applies
It meansUpdate the software and retest.
Points to: Pressure misread by the transmission computer (some 2016-2019 Honda CVTs)
IfGM bulletin applies
It meansCheck the turbine shaft seal.
Points to: Damaged turbine shaft seal (some 2024-2025 GM SUVs)
IfSolenoid does not respond
It meansRepair the valve body.
Symptoms
- Check engine light on
- Flashing D light (Honda)
- Harsh shifts or limp mode Gets more serious: stop and have it checked.
Compare with: Check engine light with loss of power
How to fix
Step 1: Ask the dealer to check your VIN for a bulletin before paying for transmission work.
Parts and cost context
- Transmission control module (TCM):On the Honda bulletin the fix is software, not hardware.
