P2714: Pressure control solenoid D is not working or stuck off
Pressure control solenoid D performance or stuck off
Severity: Inspect soon
Toyota tells owners to have the car inspected right away when the check engine light comes on for the automatic transmission, and regulations require the light when the transmission falls back to limp-home mode. General references warn that the slipping this code can cause may lead to wider transmission damage.
It gets more serious if:
- Not verified: The transmission goes into limp-home mode (stuck in one gear), slips, or will not shift. Regulations require the light in limp-home mode, but we found no source saying whether you must stop
P2714 in short
P2714 means pressure control solenoid D, which sets clutch pressure inside the transmission, is not working or appears stuck off. GM and Toyota bulletins point to debris, a dislodged retainer ring, internal clutch damage and the solenoid itself. Have it inspected soon, because slipping can damage the transmission further.
Modern automatics use several pressure control solenoids to apply each clutch smoothly. The transmission computer commands each one and checks the result. P2714 means solenoid D, or the clutch it controls, is not responding as commanded.
GM has several bulletins: a dislodged retainer ring on 2021–2025 CT5 and Escalade, debris in the valve body on 2010–2011 Escalade, a non-functioning solenoid on 2011 LaCrosse and Regal, and repairs on the Encore GX CVT. Toyota links it to internal clutch damage on some Tundra and Sequoia trucks.
Check the fluid and look for a bulletin first. Most real repairs are inside the transmission.
Most likely causes
Cause 1: Pressure control solenoid not working
Supported by vehicle data- Why it ranks here
- GM ties missing gears and P2714 on 2011 LaCrosse and Regal to a non-functioning pressure control solenoid.
- What would change this
- Rises if the solenoid does not respond to a commanded test.
Cause 2: Debris in the valve body
Supported by vehicle data- Why it ranks here
- GM tells technicians to look for valve body debris with P2714 and related codes on 2010–2011 Escalade.
- What would change this
- Rises if debris is found in the pan or valve body.
Cause 3: Dislodged retainer ring (2021–2025 CT5, Escalade)
Supported by vehicle data- Why it ranks here
- GM says a retainer ring may come loose with P2714, sometimes with no reverse.
- What would change this
- Rises on a covered Cadillac that also has no reverse.
Cause 4: Internal clutch damage (Toyota Tundra and Sequoia)
Supported by vehicle data- Why it ranks here
- Toyota links slipping and shift codes including P2714 to internal clutch damage on 2007–2009 Tundra and 2008–2009 Sequoia.
- What would change this
- Rises on a covered Toyota that slips or shifts harshly.
Cause 5: Low, leaking or dirty transmission fluid
Common general cause- Why it ranks here
- General references list low or contaminated fluid among the first causes for transmission pressure and solenoid codes.
- What would change this
- Rises if there is a leak or the fluid is low, dark or smells burnt.
What to test first
Start at step 1. Each result tells you what it means and where to go next.
Step 1: Read codes from the engine and transmission modules with a scan tool that supports both, before anything is cleared. Note every code, not just this one.
IfP2714 with several other pressure solenoid codes
It meansDebris or a shared supply problem is more likely than one solenoid.
IfP2714 alone
It meansCheck the fluid first.
Step 2: Check the transmission fluid level and look for leaks, following the owner's manual. If there is no dipstick, have a shop check the level.
Warning:The engine often has to be running and the transmission hot for a correct reading. Keep hands clear of moving parts and hot exhaust. Many newer transmissions have no dipstick and need a shop.
IfThe fluid is low, leaking, dark or smells burnt
It meansFix the leak and fluid first, then recheck the code.
IfThe fluid level and condition look right
It meansCheck for a bulletin.
Step 3: Check for a P2714 bulletin or software update for your VIN at a dealer or on the NHTSA site.
IfA 2021–2025 CT5 or Escalade
It meansGM checks for a dislodged retainer ring.
Points to: Dislodged retainer ring (2021–2025 CT5, Escalade)
IfA 2010–2011 Escalade
It meansGM checks the valve body for debris.
IfA 2011 LaCrosse or Regal
It meansGM points to the pressure control solenoid.
IfA 2007–2009 Tundra or 2008–2009 Sequoia that slips
It meansToyota points to internal clutch damage.
Points to: Internal clutch damage (Toyota Tundra and Sequoia)
IfNo bulletin applies
It meansA transmission shop needs to test it.
Step 4: Have a transmission shop command the solenoid with a scan tool and check its circuit, then inspect the pan and valve body for debris if needed.
Warning:Shop test. It is done while driving or on a lift, often with pressure gauges, and needs the maker's procedure.
IfThe solenoid does not respond or its circuit is faulty
It meansReplace or repair the solenoid circuit.
IfDebris is found
It meansFind the source of the debris before replacing parts.
Symptoms
- Check engine light
- Missing gears, slipping or long delay going into Drive Gets more serious: stop and have it checked.
- No reverse on some Cadillacs Gets more serious: stop and have it checked.
- Transmission stuck in one gear (limp-home mode) Gets more serious: stop and have it checked.
How to fix
Step 1: Do not clear the code before the transmission module has been read.
Step 2: Have the fluid level checked and look for leaks.
Step 3: Ask a dealer whether your VIN has an open P2714 bulletin. GM and Toyota have issued them.
Parts and cost context
- Transmission control module (TCM):Do not replace the module for P2714 unless a test points to it. The bulletins found fix parts inside the transmission, although GM also asks technicians to note the module date code on 2010–2011 Escalades.

P2714 questions
What does pressure control solenoid D do?
It sets hydraulic pressure for one of the clutches inside the transmission. Which clutch and gear depend on the transmission design.
Is it safe to drive with P2714?
Have it inspected soon. Toyota tells owners to get the car checked right away when the light is on for the transmission, and slipping can cause more damage if ignored.
Will a new solenoid fix P2714?
Sometimes, but GM bulletins also point to debris and a loose retainer ring, so a shop should find the cause before replacing the solenoid.
