P2757: Torque converter clutch pressure control solenoid performance or stuck off

TCC pressure control solenoid performance

P2757 in short

P2757 means the solenoid that controls pressure to the torque converter clutch is not giving the expected result, so lock-up is off or not working right. Toyota, Mazda and Ram bulletins tie it to the solenoid, fluid leaks or torque converter damage. It can cause harsh shifts or limp mode; have it inspected soon.

The torque converter clutch is applied by fluid pressure set by a solenoid. P2757 sets when the computer commands that solenoid but lock-up does not respond as expected, or the circuit performance is out of range.

Bulletins show varied causes. Toyota covers P2757 on 2014–2019 CVT Corollas with a repair procedure, Mazda found an ATF leak at the bell housing on the 2007–2010 CX-9, and Ram replaces the torque converter on some 2016 trucks for a dislodged snap ring.

When the code sets the computer may limit lock-up and go into a fail-safe mode, so shifts can feel harsh. Do not ignore it.

Most likely causes

  1. Cause 1: Low, leaking or degraded transmission fluid

    Common general cause
    Why it ranks here
A code reference lists fluid first, and Mazda found an ATF leak between engine and bell housing with P2757 on the CX-9.
    What would change this
Rises if the fluid level is low or a leak is visible.
  2. Cause 2: TCC pressure control solenoid or its wiring

    Common general cause
    Why it ranks here
The solenoid is the controlled part and a monitored output, and Toyota names the shift solenoid valve SL with P2757 on the CVT Corolla.
    What would change this
Rises if the solenoid circuit tests faulty or the code returns quickly after clearing.
  3. Cause 3: Torque converter internal damage

    Supported by vehicle data
    Why it ranks here
Ram replaces the torque converter for P2757 on some 2016 trucks after finding a dislodged internal snap ring.
    What would change this
Rises on a covered 2016 Ram or if there is debris in the fluid.
  4. Cause 4: Internal clutch damage or engine computer software (Toyota trucks)

    Supported by vehicle data
    Why it ranks here
Toyota lists P2757 among shift codes from C1 clutch damage on the 2007–2009 Sequoia and Tundra, and with a software update on the 2008–2011 Land Cruiser.
    What would change this
Rises on these models with slipping or harsh shifting.

What to test first

Start at step 1. Each result tells you what it means and where to go next.

  1. Step 1: Read codes from the engine and transmission modules with a scan tool that supports both, before anything is cleared.

Low riskTool: scan tool that reads the transmission module

  2. Step 2: Check for a P2757 bulletin for your VIN at a dealer or on the NHTSA site.

    Low risk

  3. Step 3: Have a shop check fluid level and condition and test the solenoid circuit, then command lock-up on a road test.

Best left to a shopTool: scan tool with transmission output controls

Warning:Shop test. It needs the maker's procedure.

Symptoms

  • Check engine light, sometimes the A/T warning light
  • Worse fuel economy or higher engine speed at cruise
  • Shift shock or harsh shifting Gets more serious: stop and have it checked.
  • Slipping or transmission stuck in one gear (limp-home mode) Gets more serious: stop and have it checked.

How to fix

  1. Step 1: Do not clear the code before the transmission module has been read.

  2. Step 2: Ask a dealer whether your VIN has an open P2757 bulletin. Toyota, Mazda and Ram have issued them.

Parts and cost context

  • Transmission control module (TCM):Bulletins fix P2757 with fluid, solenoid, converter or software work; replacing the transmission computer is rarely the answer.
