P2723: Pressure control solenoid E stuck off or performing poorly

Pressure control solenoid E performance/stuck off

P2723 in short

P2723 means the transmission computer saw pressure control solenoid E not doing its job, either stuck off or not matching its command. Wiring, the solenoid, fluid or internal wear can cause it. Kelley Blue Book rates it high severity, so have it inspected soon and do not tow or haul.

Pressure control solenoids set the hydraulic pressure that applies the clutches. When the computer commands pressure from solenoid E and the result does not follow, it sets P2723, usually with slipping or missing gears.

Kelley Blue Book lists the solenoid or pump, dirty fluid, a clogged filter, the valve body, wiring and internal failure. GM bulletins show the code with slipping in reverse or third, missing gears and no reverse on 6-speed automatics.

GM's repair on 2006-2009 trucks starts with inspecting the housing and pump seal rings, so the fix can be more than a solenoid. Driving on can spread metal debris.

Most likely causes

  1. Cause 1: Pressure control solenoid E stuck or failing

    Common general cause
    Why it ranks here
TroubleCodes.net and Kelley Blue Book both name the solenoid, and GM bulletins cite a non-functioning pressure control solenoid.
    What would change this
Rises if the solenoid does not respond to a commanded test, or gears are missing.
  2. Cause 2: Worn housing or pump seal rings (2006-2009 GM 6-speed)

    Supported by vehicle data
    Why it ranks here
GM bulletin 09-07-30-004F ties P2723 with slipping in reverse or third to the housing and pump seal rings.
    What would change this
Rises on a covered GM vehicle with slipping in reverse or third.
  3. Cause 3: Transmission speed sensor (2007-2008 GM 6T70/6T75)

    Supported by vehicle data
    Why it ranks here
GM bulletin 07-07-30-019 lists P2723 among codes where the speed sensor is replaced.
    What would change this
Rises on a covered Enclave, Acadia or Outlook.
  4. Cause 4: Dirty fluid, clogged filter or valve body

    Common general cause
    Why it ranks here
Kelley Blue Book lists these, and they restrict the pressure the solenoid should control.
    What would change this
Rises if the fluid is dark or holds debris.
  5. Cause 5: Wiring or connector fault

    Common general cause
    Why it ranks here
TroubleCodes.net and Kelley Blue Book list wiring.
    What would change this
Rises if the harness is damaged or the connector is corroded.

What to test first

Start at step 1. Each result tells you what it means and where to go next.

  1. Step 1: Read codes from the engine and transmission modules with a scan tool that supports both, before anything is cleared. Note other pressure control solenoid codes.

Low riskTool: scan tool that reads the transmission module

  2. Step 2: Ask a dealer or search by VIN for a P2723, slipping-in-reverse or missing-gears bulletin.

    Low risk

  3. Step 3: Check the fluid level, colour and any debris by the maker's method.

    Use caution

Warning:Many transmissions are sealed. Do not open the fill plug without the maker's procedure.

  4. Step 4: Inspect the solenoid connector and harness for chafing, corrosion and fluid in the plug.

    Low risk

  5. Step 5: Have a shop command solenoid E with a scan tool, check line pressure and inspect the pan for debris.

Best left to a shopTool: scan tool and pressure gauge

Warning:Shop test. It needs the maker's pressure specifications.

Symptoms

  • Check engine light
  • Slipping in reverse or third
  • Delayed engagement into reverse or drive
  • Missing gears, no reverse, or limp mode Gets more serious: stop and have it checked.

How to fix

  1. Step 1: Do not clear the code before the transmission module has been read.

  2. Step 2: Avoid towing and heavy loads until a shop has looked at it.

P2723 questions

What is solenoid E?

One of several pressure control solenoids that set the hydraulic pressure applying a clutch. P2723 means the computer saw solenoid E stuck off or not matching its command.

Can I drive with P2723?

Have it inspected soon. Kelley Blue Book rates it high severity, and driving on can send metal debris through the transmission.
