P2716: Electrical fault in the pressure control solenoid D circuit
Pressure control solenoid D electrical
Severity: Inspect soon
Toyota tells owners to have the car inspected right away when the check engine light comes on for the automatic transmission, and Toyota pairs this code with harsh shifts on some 2005 Corollas.
It gets more serious if:
- Not verified: The transmission goes into limp-home or default mode (stuck in one gear, little power) or will not shift. Regulations require the light in limp-home mode, but we found no source saying whether you must stop
P2716 in short
P2716 means the transmission computer found an electrical fault in the circuit for pressure control solenoid D, such as an open or short. Toyota fixed some cases with a computer update, so check for a bulletin first. Have it inspected soon, since harsh shifts can follow.
Pressure control solenoids set the hydraulic pressure used to apply clutches during shifts. The computer watches each solenoid circuit, and P2716 sets when the circuit for solenoid D looks open, shorted or out of range.
Most reports come from Toyota and Lexus. Toyota issued bulletins for harsh shifts with the light and P2716 on 2005 Corollas and Matrixes, a calibration update on 2007 Camrys, and a bulletin for the 2007 Lexus ES350.
Outside those bulletins the usual suspects are the solenoid, its connector and its wiring. A shop should check the circuit before the solenoid or valve body is replaced.
Most likely causes
Cause 1: Transmission computer calibration (2007 Camry)
Supported by vehicle data- Why it ranks here
- Toyota fixes the MIL with P2716 on these cars with a calibration update.
- What would change this
- Rises on a 2007 Camry that has not had the update.
Cause 2: Known Toyota and Lexus condition (2005 Corolla and Matrix, 2007 ES350)
Supported by vehicle data- Why it ranks here
- Toyota and Lexus issued bulletins for the MIL with P2716, with harsh shifts on the Corolla and Matrix.
- What would change this
- Rises on a covered model.
Cause 3: Solenoid D wiring, connector or solenoid fault
Common general cause- Why it ranks here
- This is an electrical circuit code, so the solenoid and its wiring are the parts the computer is testing.
- What would change this
- Rises if the connector is damaged or the solenoid fails a resistance check.
What to test first
Start at step 1. Each result tells you what it means and where to go next.
Step 1: Read codes from the engine and transmission modules with a scan tool that supports both, before anything is cleared.
IfOther solenoid circuit codes are also stored
It meansLook for a shared wiring or connector fault.
IfP2716 alone
It meansCheck for a bulletin.
Step 2: Check for a P2716 bulletin for your VIN at a Toyota or Lexus dealer or on the NHTSA site.
IfA 2007 Camry
It meansToyota has a calibration update.
IfA 2005 Corolla or Matrix, or a 2007 Lexus ES350
It meansFollow the Toyota or Lexus bulletin.
Points to: Known Toyota and Lexus condition (2005 Corolla and Matrix, 2007 ES350)
IfNo bulletin applies
It meansA shop needs to test the circuit.
Step 3: Have a shop check the solenoid D circuit and connector, and the solenoid resistance, with the maker's wiring diagram.
Warning:Shop test. It needs the maker's diagram and specification, and the solenoid is usually inside the transmission.
IfAn open, short or bad connection is found
It meansRepair the wiring or connector, or replace the solenoid.
IfThe circuit tests good
It meansRecheck for a computer update.
Symptoms
- Check engine light
- Harsh shifts (2005 Corolla and Matrix)
- Transmission stuck in one gear or reduced power (limp-home mode) Gets more serious: stop and have it checked.
How to fix
Step 1: Do not clear the code before the transmission module has been read.
Step 2: Ask a Toyota or Lexus dealer whether your VIN has a P2716 bulletin or calibration update.
Parts and cost context
- Transmission control module (TCM):On the 2007 Camry the fix is a calibration update to the existing computer, not a new one.

P2716 questions
What is the difference between P2716 and P2714?
Both concern pressure control solenoid D. P2716 means the computer found an electrical problem in its circuit, while P2714 means the solenoid is not doing its job hydraulically.
