P2704: Transmission friction element E apply time out of range

Transmission friction element E apply time range/performance

P2704 in short

P2704 means clutch E in the automatic transmission is applying outside its expected time. Ford bulletins link it to sticking valves in the 10R80 valve body, worn E clutch hub O-rings on the 10R140 diesel, and software. Check fluid first and have it inspected soon, since driving on can damage the transmission.

The transmission computer times how long a clutch takes to apply. If friction element E is outside that window, it sets P2704. Which clutch is E depends on the transmission.

Ford has three bulletins: 2020 Transit with the 10R80 and harsh engagement into drive from sticking valve body valves (most improve after 100 miles); 2022 F-550 and F-600 with the 10R140 and 6.7L diesel, where wear between the input shaft and E clutch hub damages O-rings; and 2023-2025 diesel Super Duty trucks where TCM software is the cause.

Without a bulletin, the generic list starts with low or degraded fluid, then wiring and connectors, the solenoid or valve body, and internal wear.

Most likely causes

  1. Cause 1: Low or degraded transmission fluid

    Common general cause
    Why it ranks here
PartsAvatar lists low or degraded fluid first and says to check level and condition before anything else.
    What would change this
Rises if fluid is low or dark. Falls if normal.
  2. Cause 2: Sticking valves in the main control valve body (Transit 10R80)

    Supported by vehicle data
    Why it ranks here
Ford TSB 20-2185 names sticking valve body valves for harsh engagement into drive with P0772 and/or P2704, and most vehicles improve with driving.
    What would change this
Rises on a 2020 Transit with harsh drive engagement. Falls on other vehicles.
  3. Cause 3: Worn E clutch hub and input shaft O-rings (F-550/F-600 10R140 diesel)

    Supported by vehicle data
    Why it ranks here
Ford TSB 23-2376 names input shaft O-ring damage from hub wear, causing an open E clutch circuit, with P2704 and P0771.
    What would change this
Rises on a covered 2022 F-550 or F-600 over 5,000 miles. Falls on other vehicles.
  4. Cause 4: Transmission control module software (diesel Super Duty)

    Supported by vehicle data
    Why it ranks here
Ford TSB 26-2086 names TCM software for poor shifts with P2704 and P0771 on 2023-2024 F-250 to F-450 and some 2024 F-550/F-600.
    What would change this
Rises on a covered truck. Falls once the software is current.
  5. Cause 5: Wiring, connector, solenoid or control module fault

    Possible — needs testing
    Why it ranks here
PartsAvatar lists the TCM harness, connectors, solenoid or valve body, and the TCM as possible causes.
    What would change this
Rises if connectors show corrosion or fit problems. Falls if they are clean.
How to test the transmission control module (tcm)

What to test first

Start at step 1. Each result tells you what it means and where to go next.

  1. Step 1: Ask a dealer whether your VIN has a transmission bulletin or software update for P2704.

    Low risk

  2. Step 2: Check the transmission fluid level and condition the way the owner's manual describes. Many transmissions have no dipstick; leave those to a shop.

Use cautionTool: transmission dipstick, if fitted

Warning:Run the check only as the owner's manual describes; the transmission is hot and has moving parts nearby.

  3. Step 3: Have a shop check the TCM connector and wiring, look at clutch E data and inspect for internal wear.

    Best left to a shop

Warning:Transmission work involves hot fluid and heavy, moving parts; leave this to a shop.

Symptoms

  • Harsh engagement into Drive or harsh shifts
  • Wrench or check engine light
  • Transmission slipping or reduced power Gets more serious: stop and have it checked.

How to fix

  1. Step 1: Ask a dealer whether your VIN has an open bulletin or software update for P2704.
