P2445: Secondary air pump not running when commanded (bank 1)

Secondary air injection system pump stuck off, bank 1

Severity: Monitor

Rick's Free Auto Repair Advice says the code will not stop you driving but marks an emissions fault that should be fixed.

It gets more serious if:

  • Inspect soon: Have it checked soon if the engine hesitates or stumbles on acceleration, which PartsAvatar lists as a symptom.

P2445 in short

P2445 means the secondary air injection system is not delivering air on bank 1 when the computer commands it. Leaking vacuum lines are the most common cause on Toyotas, followed by a failed air pump or pressure sensor. The car usually drives normally, but the emissions fault should be fixed.

After a cold start the secondary air system pushes fresh air into the exhaust to help the catalyst heat up and burn leftover fuel.

A pressure sensor in the air switching valve checks that this is working. On the Toyota Tacoma, the code sets when it reads under about 2.5 kPa while the computer is commanding secondary air.

So low pressure can come from a leak, a pump that is dead or seized, a blown fuse or relay, or a faulty sensor.

Most likely causes

These are general causes for this code across vehicles. None is specific to one make or model.

  1. Cause 1: Broken, cracked or leaking vacuum line

    Common general cause
    Why it ranks here
Rick's ranks leaking vacuum lines first on the Tacoma; PartsAvatar lists the vacuum hose too.
    What would change this
Rises if a hose is cracked or off. Falls if all lines are intact.
How to test the vacuum hoses and intake leaks
  2. Cause 2: Failed secondary air pump, fuse or wiring

    Common general cause
    Why it ranks here
Both sources list the pump assembly, its fuse and harness.
    What would change this
Rises if the pump gets no voltage or gets voltage and does not run. Falls if the pump runs when powered.
How to test the secondary air pump
  3. Cause 3: Air switching valve or its pressure sensor

    Possible — needs testing
    Why it ranks here
Rick's ranks the pressure sensor third; PartsAvatar lists the switching valve and sensor.
    What would change this
Rises if the pump runs and lines are sound but the sensor reading does not change. Falls if the sensor reading moves with the pump.

What to test first

Start at step 1. Each result tells you what it means and where to go next.

  1. Step 1: Read all codes and freeze-frame data, then check the air pump fuse.

    Low riskTool: scan tool

  2. Step 2: Inspect all vacuum lines at the secondary air system for cracks, splits or loose ends.

    Low risk

  3. Step 3: Have a shop check for battery voltage at the air pump after a cold start and compare the pressure sensor signal with the pump on and off.

Best left to a shopTool: multimeter

Warning:Cold-start tests are done near moving belts and a hot exhaust. Let a shop do it.

Symptoms

  • Check engine light
  • Noise from the air pump
  • Hesitation on acceleration Gets more serious: stop and have it checked.

How to fix

  1. Step 1: With the engine off and cool, check the secondary air pump fuse and look over visible vacuum lines for cracks.
