P2191: Fuel mixture too lean at higher load (bank 1)
System too lean at higher load, bank 1
Severity: Severity not verified — if the car runs badly, have it inspected
TroubleCodes.net says you may notice only the light, or poor performance and misfire in worse cases; no source rates how safe the car is to drive.
It gets more serious if:
- Inspect soon: Inspect soon if the engine misfires, hesitates or loses power under load, which TroubleCodes.net lists.
P2191 in short
P2191 means the engine is running too lean on bank 1 when under heavy load: too much air or not enough fuel. Vacuum or intake leaks are the most common cause, followed by a dirty air-flow sensor, weak fuel pressure or clogged injectors. A new oxygen sensor rarely fixes it.
The computer adds or trims fuel to keep the mixture correct. Under higher load, if it has to add more fuel than its limit and the mixture still reads lean, it sets P2191.
TroubleCodes.net calls vacuum leaks the most common cause, citing hoses and cracked plastic intake gaskets, and lists MAF contamination, low fuel pressure and injectors. It says an air-fuel sensor or computer is rarely the fix.
A 2013 Kia Optima owner had the code return after an engine replacement, with dealers naming bad gas, an oxygen sensor, a leak and a fuel kit in turn, so the cause may take testing.
Most likely causes
These are general causes for this code across vehicles. None is specific to one make or model.
Cause 1: Vacuum hose or intake leak (unmetered air)
Common general cause- Why it ranks here
- TroubleCodes.net says vacuum leaks are the most common cause it has encountered, including cracked plastic intake gaskets.
- What would change this
- Rises if smoke or a spray test finds a leak. Falls if the intake is tight.
Cause 2: Dirty or contaminated air-flow sensor
Common general cause- Why it ranks here
- TroubleCodes.net says some vehicles are prone to contamination and the MAF should be clean.
- What would change this
- Rises if the sensor is dirty or reads low. Falls if it tracks correctly.
Cause 3: Low fuel pressure or clogged injectors
Common general cause- Why it ranks here
- TroubleCodes.net lists fuel pressure and injectors as the probable cause area; an Optima owner was told a fuel kit would be replaced.
- What would change this
- Rises if pressure drops under load. Falls if pressure and injector tests pass.
What to test first
Start at step 1. Each result tells you what it means and where to go next.
Step 1: Read all codes and fuel-trim data; fix any other fuel, air-flow or misfire code first.
IfOther lean or air-flow codes are stored
It meansDiagnose them first.
IfP2191 only
It meansInspect the intake for leaks.
Step 2: Check vacuum hoses, intake boots and gaskets for cracks or loose clamps, and inspect the air-flow sensor for dirt.
Warning:Keep hands away from belts and fans with the engine running.
IfA leak is found
It meansRepair it.
IfThe sensor is dirty
It meansClean it with sensor cleaner and retest.
IfNothing found
It meansTest fuel pressure under load.
Step 3: Test fuel pressure and injector flow, and compare fuel trim at idle and under load.
Warning:Needs a professional shop with the right scan tool and wiring diagrams; do not guess at this step.
IfPressure drops under load or injectors are clogged
It meansRepair the fuel supply.
Symptoms
- Check engine light on, often alone
- Poorer fuel economy
- Misfire or hesitation under load in worse cases Gets more serious: stop and have it checked.
How to fix
Step 1: Inspect visible vacuum hoses and intake boots for cracks or loose clamps with the engine off.

P2191 questions
Will a new oxygen sensor fix P2191?
Seldom. TroubleCodes.net says fuel-trim faults are rarely fixed by an air-fuel sensor; look for unmetered air or low fuel first.
