P2006: Intake runner control stuck closed (bank 1)
Intake manifold runner control stuck closed, bank 1
Severity: Severity not verified — if the car runs badly, have it inspected
TroubleCodes.net lists the light and possible rough idle, hesitation or power loss, but no source rates how safe it is to drive. A Dodge Caliber owner said the car drove fine.
It gets more serious if:
- Inspect soon: Inspect soon if idle is rough or power is down, which TroubleCodes.net lists.
P2006 in short
P2006 means the intake runner control on bank 1 stays closed when the computer commands it open. A faulty actuator, vacuum line, wiring or position sensor, or carbon on the flaps, can cause it. You may notice only the light, or rough idle and weaker power. Have it checked before it gets worse.
Some engines have flaps or valves in the intake manifold that change airflow with engine speed. The computer commands them and watches a position signal. If the signal says closed when it should be open, it sets P2006.
TroubleCodes.net lists wiring, cracked vacuum lines, a defective actuator or position sensor, carbon on the flaps and rarely the computer.
Mazda has bulletins and an emission recall for P2006 on the Mazda3, 5, 6 and CX-7 (a shutter valve that cannot fully close), and Volkswagen Group names runner control valve N316 for P2006 on 2021 to 2024 models.
Most likely causes
Cause 1: Runner control actuator or valve failed
Common general cause- Why it ranks here
- TroubleCodes.net lists the actuator or solenoid, and Volkswagen bulletin V0124032073665_3 replaces valve N316 for P2006 on 2023 to 2024 Golf R, GTI and Arteon.
- What would change this
- Rises if the actuator does not move when commanded. Falls if it moves freely.
Cause 2: Wiring fault or leaking vacuum line
Common general cause- Why it ranks here
- TroubleCodes.net lists wiring and vacuum lines.
- What would change this
- Rises if wiring or lines test faulty. Falls if good.
Cause 3: Carbon on the flaps preventing free movement
Common general cause- Why it ranks here
- TroubleCodes.net lists carbon deposits but says they usually bring a range code as well.
- What would change this
- Rises if flaps stick when moved by hand. Falls if they move freely.
Cause 4: Shutter valve cannot fully close (Mazda recall and bulletin)
Supported by vehicle data- Why it ranks here
- Mazda bulletin 01-024/08 and recall-related bulletin 09012007 name P2006 on the Mazda3, 5, 6 and CX-7. Summaries only.
- What would change this
- Rises on a covered Mazda. Falls elsewhere.
What to test first
Start at step 1. Each result tells you what it means and where to go next.
Step 1: Read all codes and freeze-frame data; fix other manifold or air-flow codes first.
IfOther runner or air-flow codes
It meansDiagnose them first.
IfP2006 alone
It meansInspect the actuator, hoses and wiring.
Step 2: Inspect the actuator linkage, vacuum lines and wiring at the intake manifold with the engine off.
Warning:Keep away from belts and fans.
IfWiring or hose damaged
It meansRepair it.
IfLinkage binds
It meansCheck for carbon.
IfNothing found
It meansCommand the actuator with a scan tool.
Step 3: Command the runner actuator with a scan tool and watch the position signal; ask a dealer about recalls or bulletins for your model.
Warning:Needs a professional shop with the right scan tool and wiring diagrams; do not guess at this step.
IfIt does not move
It meansReplace the actuator or valve.
IfA Mazda recall or bulletin applies
It meansHave it done.
Points to: Shutter valve cannot fully close (Mazda recall and bulletin)
Symptoms
- Check engine light on
- Rough or fluctuating idle
- Hesitation or weaker power at some speeds Gets more serious: stop and have it checked.
How to fix
Step 1: Check for open recalls using your VIN, since Mazda ran an emission recall tied to P2006.

Can I drive with P2006?
Often, as a Caliber owner did, but rough idle or lost power means getting it checked soon.
