P1DB7: Torque converter clutch performance fault stored by the transmission computer on Jeep and Chrysler vehicles

Jeep/Chrysler P1DB7 torque converter clutch performance

Severity: Severity not verified — if the car runs badly, have it inspected

Stellantis links the code to a check engine light and possible transmission fluid overheating, and owners report jerking and stalling, but we found no source on how long it is safe to drive.

It gets more serious if:

  • Inspect soon: The transmission jerks on take-off, stalls or the fluid overheats.

Source: how we rate severity

P1DB7 in short

On Jeep and Chrysler vehicles, P1DB7 means the transmission computer logged a torque converter clutch performance fault. Stellantis has bulletins that fix it on some 2022-2024 Wranglers and Gladiators by reprogramming the transmission computer. Owners also report jerking and stalling, so get it checked soon; we found no drive-safety guidance.

The torque converter clutch locks the engine to the transmission at cruising speed. The computer compares actual slip with its target; when the clutch does not perform as commanded it stores P1DB7-00.

Stellantis TSBs 21-018-25 to 21-022-25 cover 2022-2024 Wranglers and Gladiators: they list P1DB7-00 with the check engine light and possible fluid overheating, and the fix is a computer reprogram. Only the summaries were read.

Owner complaints on 2015-2016 Cherokees and a 2015 Chrysler 200 describe hard shifting, a jerk on take-off and a stall, and some say the code would not clear. Those older vehicles are not covered by the Wrangler bulletins.

Pick your make

P1DB7 is a manufacturer-specific code: its meaning depends on who built the car.

Other makes: meaning not verified. Check with a scan tool that reads manufacturer definitions.

Most likely causes

  1. Cause 1: Transmission computer software that needs an update

    Supported by vehicle data
    Why it ranks here
Stellantis bulletins for 2022-2024 Wranglers and Gladiators prescribe a TCM reprogram for P1DB7-00; only summaries were read.
    What would change this
Rises if a dealer finds your VIN covered and the software is not current. Falls if it is already updated.
How to test the transmission control module (tcm)
  2. Cause 2: Worn torque converter clutch or related hardware

    Possible — needs testing
    Why it ranks here
Owners report a jerk and stall with the code on older vehicles, but none of the sources names a failed part.
    What would change this
Rises if the code returns after the software update with shudder on lock-up. Falls if the update clears it.
  3. Cause 3: Overheated transmission fluid

    Possible — needs testing
    Why it ranks here
The bulletin summary says customers may also experience transmission fluid overheating, but it does not say that causes the code.
    What would change this
Rises if the fluid is dark or burnt. Falls if the fluid is clean and cool.

What to test first

Start at step 1. Each result tells you what it means and where to go next.

  1. Step 1: Ask a Jeep or Chrysler dealer whether a TCM update bulletin applies to your VIN and whether the software is current.

    Low risk

  2. Step 2: Have a shop check the transmission fluid condition and temperature, and whether the converter clutch locks without slip on a road test.

Best left to a shopTool: scan tool with live data

Warning:Checking the fluid and lock-up needs the vehicle running and often lifted; leave it to a shop.

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on
  • Jerk on take-off or hard shifting Gets more serious: stop and have it checked.
  • Stall on the highway Gets more serious: stop and have it checked.

How to fix

  1. Step 1: Ask the dealer to check your VIN for a computer update before paying for transmission repairs.
