P17F1: Nissan: CVT judder detected, control unit (C/U) inspection needed
CVT judder, control unit inspection (Nissan)
Severity: Inspect soon
Nissan sets P17F1 when it detects CVT judder, and trade sources say it usually means a failed valve body. The car usually still drives, but get it inspected soon before the judder worsens.
It gets more serious if:
- Not verified: The transmission goes into limp-home mode (stuck in one gear, little power) or will not shift. Regulations require the light in limp-home mode, but we found no source saying whether you must stop
P17F1 in short
On Nissan vehicles, P17F1 means the CVT computer detected judder, a shudder or vibration, and flags the control unit for inspection. Trade sources say that usually means a failed valve body, though Nissan bulletins often start with a computer reprogram. Have it inspected soon, and check for a bulletin or warranty extension.
Nissan CVTs compare engine speed with transmission input speed. When the computer has to keep correcting for judder, it logs P17F0 (transmission inspection) or P17F1 (control unit inspection).
The control unit here is the hydraulic control side of the CVT. Trade sources say P17F1 usually points to a failed valve body, the part that routes fluid pressure to the pulleys.
Nissan has bulletins for P17F1 on the Altima, Maxima, Murano, Pathfinder, Quest, Rogue, Rogue Sport, Versa and Kicks. Their first step is usually a computer reprogram. Misfires, sensor and ABS faults should be ruled out first because they can cause false judder detection.
Pick your make
P17F1 is a manufacturer-specific code: its meaning depends on who built the car.
Other makes: meaning not verified. Check with a scan tool that reads manufacturer definitions.
Most likely causes
Cause 1: Failed CVT valve body (control valve)
Common general cause- Why it ranks here
- Trade sources say P17F1 is usually a failed valve body.
- What would change this
- Rises if judder continues after the software is updated.
Cause 2: Transmission computer software needs updating
Supported by vehicle data- Why it ranks here
- Nissan bulletins for P17F1 tell dealers to reprogram the transmission computer when an update applies.
- What would change this
- Rises if a bulletin covers your model and the computer has not been updated.
Cause 3: Belt slip or internal CVT wear
Possible — needs testing- Why it ranks here
- Judder codes set when the belt slips, but trade sources tie belt slip more to P17F0 than to P17F1.
- What would change this
- Rises if the engine revs flare on acceleration.
Cause 4: Misfire, sensor, ABS or electrical faults causing false judder detection
Possible — needs testing- Why it ranks here
- Trade sources advise ruling these out first because they can make the computer think the CVT is juddering.
- What would change this
- Rises if misfire, wheel speed or sensor codes are stored too.
What to test first
Start at step 1. Each result tells you what it means and where to go next.
Step 1: Read all codes from the engine, transmission and ABS computers before anything is cleared.
IfMisfire, sensor or ABS codes are also stored
It meansFix those first; they can cause false judder detection.
Points to: Misfire, sensor, ABS or electrical faults causing false judder detection
IfP17F1 alone or with other CVT codes
It meansCheck for a bulletin next.
Step 2: Ask a Nissan dealer to check your VIN for P17F1 bulletins and CVT warranty extensions.
IfA software update applies and has not been done
It meansReprogramming is Nissan's first step.
IfThe software is current or no bulletin applies
It meansThe CVT needs inspecting.
Step 3: Have a dealer or CVT specialist follow Nissan's diagnosis for judder, including a road test and fluid check.
Warning:Shop job. CVT diagnosis and repairs need the maker's procedures and tools.
IfThe hydraulic control side is at fault
It meansValve body repair or replacement.
IfSlip is found inside the CVT
It meansInternal repair or replacement.
Symptoms
- Judder, shudder or vibration when pulling away or at low speed
- Check engine light
- Reduced power or limp-home mode Gets more serious: stop and have it checked.
How to fix
Step 1: Before paying for repairs, ask a Nissan dealer whether a bulletin or CVT warranty extension covers your VIN.
Step 2: Fix any misfire or ABS fault first, then recheck whether P17F1 returns.
Parts and cost context
- Transmission control module (TCM):Nissan's first fix is often reprogramming the existing computer. The usual hardware repair for P17F1 is the valve body, not the computer.
