P0887: Transmission control module power relay control circuit high
TCM power relay circuit high
Severity: Inspect soon
Toyota tells owners to have the car inspected right away when the check engine light comes on for the automatic transmission. FCA bulletins list P0887 with the MIL, and Jeep Cherokee owners report losing acceleration with it.
It gets more serious if:
- Not verified: The vehicle loses acceleration, shows Service Transmission or is stuck in one gear. Cherokee owners report this with P0887 at highway speed, and regulations require the light in limp-home mode, but we found no source saying whether you must stop
P0887 in short
P0887 means the transmission computer saw a high signal on the circuit that controls its power relay. On some 2014–2015 Jeep Cherokee and Chrysler 200 models, FCA fixes it with a transmission software update. Owners report Service Transmission messages and lost acceleration. Have it inspected soon and ask about the update.
Some transmission computers switch their own power relay. P0887 sets when the relay control circuit reads high when it should not, which can mean a wiring fault, a relay problem or a software fault in the module.
FCA has several bulletins that reprogram the transmission computer for P0887 on the 9-speed 948TE in the Jeep Cherokee and Chrysler 200, and Cherokee owners describe dealers calling it a known software issue.
Most likely causes
Cause 1: Transmission computer software (2014–2015 Jeep Cherokee, 2015 Chrysler 200)
Supported by vehicle data- Why it ranks here
- FCA bulletins list P0887 and reprogram the transmission computer on these models, and a Cherokee dealer called it a known software issue.
- What would change this
- Rises on these models if the software is not up to date.
Cause 2: Power relay or its control wiring
Common general cause- Why it ranks here
- The code is defined as a high signal on the relay control circuit.
- What would change this
- Rises if the relay or its wiring tests bad.
What to test first
Start at step 1. Each result tells you what it means and where to go next.
Step 1: Read codes from the engine and transmission modules with a scan tool that supports both, before anything is cleared.
IfP0887 on a Jeep Cherokee or Chrysler 200 with the 9-speed
It meansLook for the software bulletin.
IfP0887 on another vehicle
It meansCheck the relay circuit.
Step 2: Ask a dealer whether a P0887 software update applies to your VIN.
IfA 2014–2015 Jeep Cherokee or 2015 Chrysler 200
It meansFCA has a reprogramming bulletin.
Points to: Transmission computer software (2014–2015 Jeep Cherokee, 2015 Chrysler 200)
IfNo bulletin applies or the code returns after the update
It meansA shop needs to test the relay circuit.
Step 3: Have a shop test the transmission power relay and its control circuit with the wiring diagram.
Warning:Shop test. It needs the maker's wiring diagram.
IfThe relay or wiring is faulty
It meansRepair it.
IfThe circuit tests good
It meansThe module or its software is the likely cause.
Points to: Transmission computer software (2014–2015 Jeep Cherokee, 2015 Chrysler 200)
Symptoms
- Check engine light
- Service Transmission message
- Loss of acceleration or stuck in one gear Gets more serious: stop and have it checked.
How to fix
Step 1: Do not clear the code before the transmission module has been read; the stored data helps the shop.
Step 2: Ask a dealer whether your VIN has an open P0887 bulletin or software update.
