P0884: Transmission control module power input signal intermittent
TCM power input intermittent
Severity: Inspect soon
Kelley Blue Book rates P0884 as quite serious but drivable for a short time, and Toyota tells owners to have the car inspected right away when the check engine light comes on for the automatic transmission.
It gets more serious if:
- Not verified: The engine stalls or the vehicle loses drive while moving. Owners of 2007 Grand Cherokees, a 2008 Ram 1500 and a 2011 Fiesta report this with P0884, but we found no source saying whether you must stop
P0884 in short
P0884 means the transmission computer saw its power supply drop out briefly. Shifting can become harsh or erratic, and some owners report stalling or loss of drive. Loose connections, a relay or fuse, low battery voltage and the module itself are common causes. Have it inspected soon, and stop driving if it stalls.
The transmission computer needs a steady battery and ignition feed. P0884 sets when that power input is lost or dips for short moments and then comes back, which is why it is called intermittent.
Because the fault comes and goes, a shop may not reproduce it. Start with the battery, grounds, fuses and connectors. Ford lists P0884 in a bulletin about delayed engagement on 2012–2013 Focus models.
Most likely causes
Cause 1: Loose, corroded or damaged power or ground connections
Common general cause- Why it ranks here
- Open or shorted connections, loose wires and connector pins are the main causes listed.
- What would change this
- Rises if a connector, ground or battery terminal is loose or corroded.
Cause 2: Power relay or fuse problem
Common general cause- Why it ranks here
- A relay or fuse problem is a listed cause.
- What would change this
- Rises if the fuse or relay is loose, damaged or tests bad.
Cause 3: Low battery or charging voltage
Common general cause- Why it ranks here
- Low battery voltage is listed as a cause.
- What would change this
- Rises if the battery or charging system tests weak.
Cause 4: Transmission computer or its software (some Ford Focus/Fiesta)
Supported by vehicle data- Why it ranks here
- Ford lists P0884 in a 2012–2013 Focus bulletin, and a 2011 Fiesta dealer reprogrammed the engine and transmission computers for it.
- What would change this
- Rises on those models, or if wiring and power test good.
What to test first
Start at step 1. Each result tells you what it means and where to go next.
Step 1: Read codes from the engine and transmission modules with a scan tool that supports both, before anything is cleared.
IfLow-voltage or communication codes are also stored
It meansCheck the battery, charging and grounds first.
IfP0884 alone
It meansLook for a bulletin.
Step 2: Check for a P0884 bulletin or software update for your VIN at a dealer or on the NHTSA site.
IfA 2012–2013 Ford Focus with delayed engagement
It meansFord has a bulletin.
Points to: Transmission computer or its software (some Ford Focus/Fiesta)
IfNo bulletin applies
It meansCheck the battery, fuses and connections.
Step 3: Have a shop test the battery and charging, then check the transmission computer power, ground and relay circuits while wiggling the harness.
Warning:Shop test. It needs the maker's wiring diagram.
IfVoltage drops when the harness is moved
It meansRepair the connection or wire.
Points to: Loose, corroded or damaged power or ground connections
IfA fuse or relay is faulty
It meansReplace it and recheck.
IfBattery or charging voltage is low
It meansFix the battery or charging fault.
Symptoms
- Check engine light
- Harsh or failed shifts
- Gear display flashing
- Stalling or loss of drive while moving Gets more serious: stop and have it checked.
How to fix
Step 1: Do not clear the code before the transmission module has been read; the stored data helps the shop.
Step 2: Have the battery and charging system tested, and check that the battery terminals are clean and tight.
Step 3: Check the transmission fuses listed in the owner's manual.
Step 4: Ask a dealer whether your VIN has an open P0884 bulletin or software update.
