P084A: Transmission fluid pressure sensor or switch H circuit fault

Transmission fluid pressure sensor/switch H circuit

P084A in short

P084A means the transmission computer found an electrical problem in the circuit for fluid pressure sensor or switch H. A faulty sensor, wiring or connector fault, or control module are the usual suspects. Low fluid is a common thing to overlook. Have it inspected soon, as shifting and fuel economy can suffer.

Some transmissions have several fluid pressure sensors or switches that tell the computer how much pressure each clutch circuit has. The letter H marks one of them, and which one depends on the transmission.

P084A is a circuit code, so the computer sees a bad signal rather than a measured pressure problem: a short, an open, a bad ground, or a sensor that reads wrong.

PartsAvatar lists a signal short, ground trouble, a faulty sensor, open wiring and a faulty TCM or PCM. Typical symptoms are the service engine light, starting in 2nd or 3rd gear, poor shifting and extra fuel use. The most common mistakes it names are overlooking low fluid and blaming the sensor without checking connections.

Most likely causes

These are general causes for this code across vehicles. None is specific to one make or model.

  1. Cause 1: Faulty pressure sensor or switch H

    Common general cause
    Why it ranks here
Both references list the sensor or switch itself.
    What would change this
Rises if wiring and voltage are good but the reading is wrong. Falls if wiring faults are found.
  2. Cause 2: Wiring, connector or ground problem

    Common general cause
    Why it ranks here
Both references list wiring and connector faults, and PartsAvatar adds shorts to voltage, open circuits and grounds; it says to check connectors before blaming the sensor.
    What would change this
Rises if connectors are corroded or the harness is damaged. Falls if the circuit tests good.
  3. Cause 3: Low transmission fluid

    Possible — needs testing
    Why it ranks here
PartsAvatar names overlooked low fluid as a common diagnostic mistake.
    What would change this
Rises if fluid is low. Falls if the level is right.
  4. Cause 4: Faulty TCM or PCM

    Possible — needs testing
    Why it ranks here
PartsAvatar lists the module, and TaT lists the driver circuit; this is usually the last suspect.
    What would change this
Rises only after sensor, wiring and fluid are cleared.

What to test first

Start at step 1. Each result tells you what it means and where to go next.

  1. Step 1: Read all stored codes. Look for power-supply or other pressure sensor codes stored with P084A.

    Low riskTool: OBD-II scan tool

    • IfPower-supply or other circuit codes are stored too

It meansThose may be the root cause.

      Go to step 2

    • IfP084A is the only code

It meansCheck bulletins, then fluid and wiring.

      Go to step 2

  2. Step 2: Ask a dealer whether your VIN has a bulletin for P084A.

    Low risk

  3. Step 3: Check the transmission fluid level by the method in the owner's manual. Many transmissions have no dipstick; leave those to a shop.

Use cautionTool: transmission dipstick, if fitted

Warning:Run the check only as the owner's manual describes; the transmission is hot and has moving parts nearby.

  4. Step 4: Have a shop inspect the sensor connector and wiring and check the sensor reading with a scan tool.

Best left to a shopTool: scan tool, multimeter

Warning:Transmission work involves hot fluid and heavy, moving parts; leave this to a shop.

Symptoms

  • Check engine light
  • Transmission starts in second or third gear
  • Poor shifting
  • Worse fuel economy

How to fix

  1. Step 1: Ask a dealer whether your VIN has an open bulletin for P084A.
