P07E4: Transmission unable to engage Park
Unable to engage Park
Severity: Inspect soon
Carly says the code is not serious for now, but Ford bulletins say the car may refuse to engage park and then apply the electronic parking brake, so it should be looked at soon.
It gets more serious if:
- Not verified: The car rolls or shifts to neutral in Drive, or will not hold in park. Ford TSB 22-2145 describes a momentary neutral-out, but we found no source rating how dangerous it is.
P07E4 in short
P07E4 means the transmission could not engage Park when requested. A mechanical fault is common, such as the park manual release cable not stowed or wrong, or a park valve leak. Carly calls it not serious for now, but the car may not hold in park, so have it checked soon.
On many newer automatics Park is engaged by the computer and a mechanical park system. P07E4 sets when the computer commands Park and the position feedback shows it did not engage.
GEARS Magazine describes a 2020 Ford Escape where a faulty or wrongly routed park manual release cable caused the code, and says it is a mechanical, not electrical, problem. Ford TSB 20-2265 covers Escape and Corsair cars with the same symptom.
Ford also lists P07E4 with loose grounds on some 2020-2021 Explorers and Aviators, and with a park valve leak on 10R-series transmissions. Ram has a software update for the 2019 Ram 1500.
Most likely causes
Cause 1: Park manual release cable wrong or not stowed (2020 Escape/Corsair)
Supported by vehicle data- Why it ranks here
- Ford TSB 20-2265 and the GEARS Magazine case both name the park manual release cable on 8F transmissions.
- What would change this
- Rises on a covered Escape or Corsair, especially after underhood or transmission work.
Cause 2: Park valve circuit leak, separator plate (2018-2021 Ford and Lincoln 10R)
Supported by vehicle data- Why it ranks here
- Ford TSB 22-2145 ties neutral-out with P07E6 and/or P07E4 to a leak in the park valve circuit.
- What would change this
- Rises on a covered truck or SUV with a momentary neutral-out in Drive.
Cause 3: Loose body grounds G210 and G214 (2020-2021 Explorer/Aviator)
Supported by vehicle data- Why it ranks here
- Ford SSM 49329 lists P07E4 with B135C and U0103, no crank or remote start, and a wrench light.
- What would change this
- Rises if several modules set communication codes at once.
Cause 4: Transmission module software (2019 Ram 1500)
Supported by vehicle data- Why it ranks here
- Ram 21-033-20 reflashes the module for a MIL with P07E4-00 among the codes.
- What would change this
- Rises on a covered Ram.
Cause 5: Other mechanical park system fault
Possible — needs testing- Why it ranks here
- GEARS Magazine says the cause is mechanical, not electrical, so linkage, shifter or park mechanism faults are worth testing.
- What would change this
- Rises when the cable and valve are ruled out.
What to test first
Start at step 1. Each result tells you what it means and where to go next.
Step 1: Read codes with a scan tool that supports the transmission and body modules, before anything is cleared. Note P07E6, B135C, U0103 or any park status reading.
IfP07E6 as well, with a momentary neutral-out in Drive
It meansCheck the park valve bulletin.
Points to: Park valve circuit leak, separator plate (2018-2021 Ford and Lincoln 10R)
IfB135C or U0103 with no crank or remote start
It meansCheck grounds G210 and G214.
Points to: Loose body grounds G210 and G214 (2020-2021 Explorer/Aviator)
IfOnly P07E4
It meansCheck the park release cable.
Step 2: Look at the underhood end of the park manual release cable and confirm it is routed and stowed as the maker shows, without any pull on the transmission lever.
IfCable is wrong or not stowed on a 2020 Escape or Corsair
It meansCorrect it as the bulletin says.
Points to: Park manual release cable wrong or not stowed (2020 Escape/Corsair)
IfCable looks right
It meansA shop should check the park system.
Step 3: Have a shop watch the park status reading and disconnect the cable at the transmission. If park then engages, the cable is the fault.
Warning:Shop test. The car may not hold on a slope, so chock the wheels.
IfPark engages with the cable disconnected
It meansThe cable is the fault.
Points to: Park manual release cable wrong or not stowed (2020 Escape/Corsair)
IfPark still fails
It meansSuspect the park valve or internal park mechanism.
Symptoms
- Wrench or transmission warning lamp
- Shift system fault message
- Electronic parking brake applies by itself
- Car moves in park or shifts to neutral in Drive Gets more serious: stop and have it checked.
How to fix
Step 1: Use the parking brake and chock a wheel on a slope until a shop confirms park holds.
Step 2: Ask a dealer whether your VIN has an open bulletin. Ford and Ram have published several.
Parts and cost context
- Transmission control module (TCM):Do not replace the module for P07E4. Ram handles one case with software and Ford ties other cases to a cable or valve body.

P07E4 questions
Is P07E4 an electrical problem?
Often not. GEARS Magazine describes a case where the park manual release cable was at fault, which is mechanical, and Ford also ties it to a park valve leak.
Can I drive with P07E4?
Have it checked soon. Carly says it is not serious for now, but the car may not hold in park, so use the parking brake and wheel chocks on slopes.
