P0763: Shift solenoid C electrical fault
Shift solenoid C electrical
Severity: Inspect soon
Hyundai says bad solenoids can hold the transaxle in 4th gear as a fail-safe, and owners report hesitating or jerking into gear. Have it inspected soon.
It gets more serious if:
- Stop: Stop driving if the vehicle will not move when you select a gear, or loses drive in traffic. An Odyssey owner reports it fails to move or hesitates in reverse.
P0763 in short
P0763 means the transmission computer found an electrical fault in shift solenoid C. Likely causes are the solenoid, its wiring or ground, or a harness problem inside the transmission. Some makes have bulletins that replace solenoids or fix a harness. The car may default to one gear, so get it inspected soon.
Automatic transmissions shift by using electric solenoids to direct fluid pressure. The transmission computer checks each solenoid circuit, and if solenoid C does not respond electrically as commanded, it sets P0763 and often limits shifting to a fail-safe gear.
The bulletins we found point at wiring and solenoids more than at the computer. Ford blamed a shorted internal harness on certain 2005 transaxles, Acura says to check a ground after a rebuilt transmission, and Hyundai and Kia replace the solenoids rather than the transmission.
Owners also report P0763 on a Honda Odyssey that hesitates before jerking into gear, and on a Ford F-150 where the dealer found metal in the pan. A stored P0763 can be a sign of damage elsewhere, so look at the other codes too.
Most likely causes
Cause 1: Shift solenoid C or the solenoid pack
Supported by vehicle data- Why it ranks here
- Hyundai and Kia bulletins replace solenoids for P0763, and TroubleCodes.net lists the solenoid as a cause. Only summaries were read.
- What would change this
- Rises if the solenoid resistance is out of specification or a code history shows repeated solenoid codes. Falls if the solenoid tests normal.
Cause 2: Transmission internal harness or ground fault
Supported by vehicle data- Why it ranks here
- Ford 051115 names a shorted internal harness on 2005 4F50N transaxles, and Acura 603 says to check ground G151 after a remanufactured transmission.
- What would change this
- Rises if a continuity or short test on the harness fails, or the code began after a transmission replacement. Falls if the wiring and ground test good.
Cause 3: Transmission control module or its power supply
Possible — needs testing- Why it ranks here
- TroubleCodes.net lists the module as a possible cause, and a GV70 owner had P0880 (TCM power input) with P0763. It is a weak lead until power and ground are tested.
- What would change this
- Rises if P0880 or other module codes are also stored. Falls if power, ground and the solenoid circuit are all good.
Cause 4: Internal transmission damage
Supported by vehicle data- Why it ranks here
- An F-150 dealer diagnosed an internal failure with P0763 and found fine metal shavings in the pan. A single complaint, so it ranks low.
- What would change this
- Rises if the fluid is burnt or the pan has metal. Falls if the fluid is clean.
What to test first
Start at step 1. Each result tells you what it means and where to go next.
Step 1: Read all stored codes and freeze-frame data from the transmission module.
IfP0880 or other module power codes are stored
It meansCheck the module power supply first.
IfOther solenoid codes such as P0758 or P0768 are stored
It meansLook at the whole solenoid pack and harness.
IfOnly P0763
It meansCheck for bulletins next.
Step 2: Ask a dealer whether your make has a solenoid, harness or software bulletin for P0763.
IfA solenoid bulletin applies, as on some Hyundai and Kia models
It meansFollow the dealer repair.
IfNothing applies
It meansTest the wiring.
Step 3: Have the harness, connector and ground between the transmission and its computer tested, and the solenoid resistance measured.
Warning:The transmission pan and harness are under the vehicle and the fluid can be hot. Leave this to a shop.
IfThe harness shorts, is damaged or a ground is poor
It meansRepair the wiring.
IfWiring is good and resistance is out of specification
It meansThe solenoid is suspect.
IfEverything tests normal and the fluid is dirty or metallic
It meansInternal damage is possible.
Symptoms
- Check engine or transmission warning light
- Hesitation or a jerk when selecting a gear
- Transmission stuck in one gear (limp mode)
- Vehicle fails to move when a gear is selected Gets more serious: stop and have it checked.
How to fix
Step 1: Ask a dealer whether a solenoid or software bulletin applies to your VIN for P0763.
Parts and cost context
- Transmission control module (TCM):Usually not the first part to replace; the bulletins we found point at solenoids and wiring. Labor varies; get a quote.
