P0758: Shift solenoid B electrical fault
Shift solenoid B electrical
Severity: Inspect soon
Toyota tells owners to have the car inspected right away when the check engine light comes on for the automatic transmission, and Kelley Blue Book advises fixing P0758 right away because the transmission may lose gears or go into limp mode.
It gets more serious if:
- Not verified: The transmission goes into limp-home mode (stuck in one gear, little power) or the vehicle will not move. Regulations require the light in limp-home mode, but we found no source saying whether you must stop
P0758 in short
P0758 means the transmission computer found an electrical fault in shift solenoid B or its circuit. The car may skip gears, start off in a higher gear or go into limp mode. Wiring, the solenoid and, on some Toyota and Ford models, the computer are common causes. Have it inspected soon.
Shift solenoid B is one of the valves the computer switches to change gear. P0758 is an electrical code: the computer saw a voltage or current on the solenoid B circuit that does not match what it commanded, as from an open or short.
Many transmissions fall back to a fixed gear when a shift solenoid fails. Ford linked P0758 to an intermittent loss of 1st and 2nd gear on some CD4E transmissions, Hyundai to a 4th-gear fail-safe, and Toyota to harsh shifts on 2001–2003 RAV4s fixed by replacing the engine computer.
Most likely causes
Cause 1: Solenoid wiring, harness or connector fault
Common general cause- Why it ranks here
- P0758 is an electrical code, wiring is a listed cause, and a 2011 Sonata owner traced it to a shorted harness.
- What would change this
- Rises if the harness is chafed or the circuit is open or shorted.
Cause 2: Faulty shift solenoid B
Common general cause- Why it ranks here
- The solenoid is the controlled part and the first cause code references list.
- What would change this
- Rises if the solenoid resistance is out of spec once wiring is ruled out.
Cause 3: Engine or transmission computer (2001–2003 Toyota RAV4, some Ford CD4E)
Supported by vehicle data- Why it ranks here
- Toyota covers P0758 on the 2001–2003 RAV4 and owners quote the repair as engine computer replacement; Ford covers P0758 on some 2000–2001 CD4E cars.
- What would change this
- Rises on a 2001–2003 RAV4 with several solenoid codes.
Cause 4: Low fluid or valve body problem
Possible — needs testing- Why it ranks here
- Code references list low fluid and the valve body, but they rarely cause an electrical code by themselves.
- What would change this
- Rises if the fluid is low and the circuit tests good.
What to test first
Start at step 1. Each result tells you what it means and where to go next.
Step 1: Read codes from the engine and transmission modules with a scan tool that supports both, before anything is cleared.
IfSeveral solenoid codes are stored together
It meansA shared power feed, harness or the computer is more likely than one solenoid.
IfP0758 alone
It meansLook for a bulletin.
Step 2: Check for a P0758 bulletin for your VIN at a dealer or on the NHTSA site.
IfA 2001–2003 Toyota RAV4 with harsh shifts
It meansToyota has a bulletin.
Points to: Engine or transmission computer (2001–2003 Toyota RAV4, some Ford CD4E)
IfA 2000–2001 Ford Contour, Mystique, Cougar or 2001 Escape with loss of 1st and 2nd
It meansFord has a bulletin for some CD4E transmissions.
Points to: Engine or transmission computer (2001–2003 Toyota RAV4, some Ford CD4E)
IfNo bulletin applies
It meansA shop needs to test the circuit.
Step 3: Have a shop check the solenoid B circuit and solenoid resistance with the wiring diagram.
Warning:Shop test. It needs the maker's wiring diagram, pressure specs and test procedure.
IfThe circuit is open or shorted
It meansRepair the wiring.
IfThe circuit is good but the solenoid is out of spec
It meansReplace the solenoid.
Symptoms
- Check engine light or flashing transmission light
- Harsh shifts or trouble with the 2–3 shift
- Starts off in 2nd or 3rd gear
- Stuck in one gear, or loss of 1st and 2nd gear Gets more serious: stop and have it checked.
How to fix
Step 1: Do not clear the code before the transmission module has been read; the stored data helps the shop.
Step 2: Check the transmission fuses listed in the owner's manual before replacing parts.
Step 3: Ask a dealer whether your VIN has an open P0758 bulletin or software update.
Parts and cost context
- Transmission control module (TCM):Replace a computer for P0758 only after wiring and the solenoid are checked, unless a bulletin such as Toyota's for the 2001–2003 RAV4 points to it.
