P0760: Shift solenoid C performance or stuck
Shift solenoid C fault
Severity: Inspect soon
A shift solenoid fault can cause wrong or missing gears and may drop the transmission into limp mode, so have it checked soon.
It gets more serious if:
- Stop: Treat as Stop if the transmission stays in one gear, slips badly or will not drive.
P0760 in short
P0760 means the transmission computer found shift solenoid C stuck or not working as commanded, usually causing wrong gears or limp mode. Dirty fluid, a failed solenoid, a damaged harness or valve body wear are common causes. Get it checked soon, and stop driving if it sticks in one gear.
Shift solenoid C is one of the valves the computer uses to route fluid and select gears. If its electrical check or shift result is wrong, P0760 sets.
References list dirty fluid, a failed solenoid, wiring, and valve body wear. Bulletins add Ford's 2005 Freestar and Taurus internal harness short, Hyundai solenoid DTC bulletins, and a Chrysler bulletin for MIL lighting with P0760 on 2003-2005 Jeeps and Dodge trucks.
Fluid and bulletins come first; solenoid replacement follows.
Most likely causes
Cause 1: Internal wiring harness fault
Supported by vehicle data- Why it ranks here
- Ford's 2005 bulletin for Freestar, Taurus, Monterey and Sable lists P0760 and says a sharp edge in the 4F50N side cover casting may short the internal harness (vehicles built before 3/15/2005).
- What would change this
- Rises if your VIN matches. Falls if wiring tests good.
Cause 2: Failed shift solenoid C
Common general cause- Why it ranks here
- Both references list the solenoid itself as a typical cause.
- What would change this
- Rises if resistance or response is bad. Falls if the solenoid tests good.
Cause 3: Dirty fluid or sticking valve body
Common general cause- Why it ranks here
- Fluid contamination and valve wear are on both references as causes.
- What would change this
- Rises if fluid is dark or has debris. Falls if clean.
Cause 4: Software or bulletin repair
Supported by vehicle data- Why it ranks here
- Hyundai TSB-10-AT-010 lists P0760 among solenoid DTCs where incorrect solenoid operation can put the transaxle in 3rd gear fail-safe; Chrysler 2100905 covers MIL lighting with P0760 on 2003-2005 Jeep and Dodge models.
- What would change this
- Rises if your VIN matches. Falls if not.
What to test first
Start at step 1. Each result tells you what it means and where to go next.
Step 1: Read codes, check for other solenoid codes, and ask a dealer about bulletins.
IfA bulletin applies
It meansFollow it.
IfNo bulletin
It meansInspect fluid and wiring.
Step 2: Check fluid level and condition; look for debris.
IfFluid is bad
It meansService it and retest.
IfFluid is fine
It meansTest the solenoid and harness.
Step 3: Have a shop test solenoid resistance and harness, then inspect the valve body.
Warning:Have a qualified shop do this step.
IfHarness fault found
It meansRepair it.
IfThe solenoid fails
It meansReplace it.
Symptoms
- Stuck in one gear or limp mode Gets more serious: stop and have it checked.
- Harsh or wrong shifts
- Check engine light
How to fix
Step 1: Ask a dealer whether your VIN has a bulletin for P0760.
Parts and cost context
- Transmission control module (TCM):The solenoid sits inside the transmission, so access usually means pan or valve body work. Labor varies; get a quote.
