P0755: Shift solenoid B circuit or operation fault
Shift solenoid B
Severity: Inspect soon
Trade references say a shift solenoid B fault tends to get worse and should be repaired promptly; it can leave the transmission stuck in one gear or shifting harshly.
It gets more serious if:
- Not verified: The transmission goes into limp-home mode (stuck in one gear, little power) or will not shift. Regulations require the light in limp-home mode, but we found no source saying whether you must stop
P0755 in short
P0755 means the transmission computer has found a fault with shift solenoid B, one of the valves that changes gears. The solenoid, its wiring, or low or dirty fluid are common causes, and Toyota, Hyundai and Ram have bulletins. Have it inspected soon, because the transmission may stick in one gear.
Shift solenoids are electric valves inside the transmission that route fluid to apply clutches and bands. The computer switches them on and off to change gears. P0755 sets when solenoid B's circuit is open, shorted or does not produce the expected gear.
Which gears solenoid B controls depends on the transmission, so symptoms vary: harsh or delayed shifts, no upshift, or a backup mode that holds one gear. Some makers label the solenoid differently; Ram calls it the 2C solenoid in one bulletin.
Toyota ran a service campaign on 2001–2003 RAV4s for harsh shifts with P0755 and related solenoid codes, and Hyundai has a bulletin covering many solenoid codes on older models. Checking fluid level and condition, then the bulletins, comes before replacing parts.
Most likely causes
Cause 1: Known automatic transaxle condition (2001–2003 Toyota RAV4)
Supported by vehicle data- Why it ranks here
- Toyota issued a bulletin and a service campaign for harsh shifts and the MIL with P0750, P0753, P0755, P0758 or P1760 on these RAV4s.
- What would change this
- Rises on a 2001–2003 RAV4 with harsh shifts, especially if the campaign has not been done.
Cause 2: Faulty shift solenoid B
Common general cause- Why it ranks here
- The solenoid itself is a standard cause, and Hyundai lists P0755 among solenoid codes from incorrect solenoid operation.
- What would change this
- Rises if the solenoid's resistance is out of spec or it does not click when commanded.
Cause 3: Damaged wiring or connector to the solenoid
Common general cause- Why it ranks here
- Wiring and connector faults are listed causes, and connector corrosion and pinched wires are checked first on any transmission circuit.
- What would change this
- Rises if the code is intermittent or the circuit reads open or shorted at the module.
Cause 4: Low or dirty transmission fluid
Common general cause- Why it ranks here
- Low or dirty fluid is a listed cause, and the wrong fluid can cause shift shudder and shock.
- What would change this
- Rises if the level is low or the fluid is dark or burnt-smelling.
Cause 5: Solenoid circuit condition covered by a Ram bulletin (2019–2022 Ram 2500/3500)
Supported by vehicle data- Why it ranks here
- Ram has a bulletin for the MIL with P0755 (2C solenoid circuit), P0765 and/or P0871 on these trucks.
- What would change this
- Rises on a 2019–2022 Ram HD with P0765 or P0871 also stored.
Cause 6: Valve body or pump problem
Possible — needs testing- Why it ranks here
- Listed as a less common cause; the valve body holds the solenoids and the pump supplies the pressure they route.
- What would change this
- Rises if the solenoid and wiring test good but the shift fault remains.
What to test first
Start at step 1. Each result tells you what it means and where to go next.
Step 1: Check the transmission fluid level and condition using the method in the owner's manual.
Warning:Many transmissions are checked hot with the engine running. Keep hands clear of the fan and belts, and if there is no dipstick leave it to a shop.
IfLow, dark or burnt-smelling fluid
It meansFluid is a likely cause; a shop should find why it is low or dirty.
IfLevel and condition are good
It meansCheck for bulletins.
Step 2: Check for open campaigns and P0755 bulletins for your VIN at a dealer or on the NHTSA site.
IfA 2001–2003 RAV4
It meansAsk a Toyota dealer about the service campaign.
Points to: Known automatic transaxle condition (2001–2003 Toyota RAV4)
IfA 2019–2022 Ram 2500 or 3500
It meansRam's bulletin applies.
Points to: Solenoid circuit condition covered by a Ram bulletin (2019–2022 Ram 2500/3500)
IfNo bulletin applies
It meansA shop needs to test the solenoid circuit.
Step 3: Have a shop command the solenoid with a scan tool and check its circuit and resistance.
Warning:Shop test. Circuit checks follow the maker's wiring diagram, and solenoids are often inside the transmission.
IfThe circuit reads open or shorted in the harness
It meansA wiring or connector fault.
IfThe solenoid itself is out of spec
It meansReplace the solenoid.
IfCircuit and solenoid test good but the fault remains
It meansThe valve body or pump needs inspection.
Symptoms
- Check engine light
- Delayed, harsh or erratic shifts
- Transmission stuck in one gear Gets more serious: stop and have it checked.
- Reduced power or limp-home mode Gets more serious: stop and have it checked.
How to fix
Step 1: Check the fluid level and condition first; top up only with the fluid the owner's manual specifies.
Step 2: Ask a dealer whether your VIN has an open campaign or P0755 bulletin. Toyota, Hyundai and Ram have issued them.
Parts and cost context
- Transmission control module (TCM):Do not replace the transmission computer for P0755 unless the solenoid and wiring test good and a test points to the module.
