P0461: Fuel level signal not changing as expected

Fuel level sensor A circuit range/performance

Severity: Monitor

A fuel level sensor performance fault mainly affects the fuel gauge and fuel readouts, not how the engine runs.

It gets more serious if:

  • Inspect soon: Inspect soon if you cannot tell how much fuel is in the tank, since you could run out of fuel.

P0461 in short

P0461 means the computer sees a fuel level signal that is stuck or does not change plausibly as fuel is used. Causes include a worn level sender in the tank, wiring or connector problems, or a bad ground. It usually only affects the gauge, but you could run out of fuel if you trust it.

The computer expects the fuel level to change steadily as you drive. If the signal stays fixed after you burn a lot of fuel, or jumps around, it sets P0461.

Friday Parts lists a worn or stuck fuel sender, corroded or loose wiring, a poor ground, a gauge fault and rarely the computer. That article is written mainly for heavy equipment, so treat the list as general.

General Motors and Saturn bulletins cover P0461 on early 2000s Grand Am, Alero and Vue models, including a Vue whose fuel gauge reads empty.

Most likely causes

  1. Cause 1: Worn or stuck fuel level sender

    Common general cause
    Why it ranks here
Friday Parts lists a worn sender resistor, a sunken float or a stuck arm first.
    What would change this
Rises if the gauge sticks or reads empty after filling. Falls if sender resistance changes smoothly with the float.
How to test the fuel level sensor (sending unit)
  2. Cause 2: Corroded, loose or chafed wiring or connector

    Common general cause
    Why it ranks here
Friday Parts lists corrosion, loose connectors and chafed wires.
    What would change this
Rises if the reading jumps with vibration or bumps. Falls if the circuit tests good.
  3. Cause 3: Known fuel gauge fault on some models

    Supported by vehicle data
    Why it ranks here
Saturn's bulletin covers P0461 on 2002-2003 Vue models with a false low or stuck-on-empty gauge, and GM updated the P0461 diagnostic for the Grand Am and Alero.
    What would change this
Rises on those models. Falls on other vehicles.
  4. Cause 4: Poor sender ground

    Possible — needs testing
    Why it ranks here
Friday Parts lists a corroded or loose ground as a cause of wrong readings.
    What would change this
Rises if the gauge reads strangely or other circuits near the tank misbehave.

What to test first

Start at step 1. Each result tells you what it means and where to go next.

  1. Step 1: Compare the fuel gauge with how much fuel you added at the last fill-up, and read the codes.

    Low riskTool: OBD-II scan tool

    • IfThe gauge is stuck, jumps or reads empty after filling

It meansCheck the sender and wiring.

      Go to step 2

    • IfThe gauge is accurate and the code returns

It meansCheck wiring and ground for an intermittent fault.

      Go to step 2

  2. Step 2: Have a technician check the sender connector, ground and wiring, and the sender's resistance range.

Best left to a shopTool: multimeter, service manual

Warning:The sender is inside the fuel tank. Do not open the fuel system yourself; fuel vapor is flammable.

Symptoms

  • Fuel gauge stuck on empty or full, or jumping
  • Check engine light
  • Low fuel warning with a full tank
  • Cannot tell how much fuel is left Gets more serious: stop and have it checked.

How to fix

  1. Step 1: Track mileage since the last fill-up so you do not rely on the gauge.
