P0444: The computer sees an open circuit on the EVAP purge control valve
EVAP purge control valve circuit open
Severity: Severity not verified — if the car runs badly, have it inspected
Nissan and Land Rover bulletins and TroubleCodes.net describe a purge valve circuit fault, not a drivability hazard, but no source rates driving risk, so the class is not set.
P0444 in short
P0444 means the engine computer sees an open circuit on the evaporative emission purge control valve. Wiring, a loose or corroded connector or the valve itself are the usual causes. It is not usually a safety problem, but the check engine light stays on and the car may fail an emissions test.
The purge valve lets fuel vapor from the charcoal canister into the engine at the right time. The computer drives it electrically, and P0444 says that circuit looks open.
TroubleCodes.net lists damaged, corroded or disconnected wiring and connectors, an open circuit and a failed valve. Nissan bulletins name the code on the 2006 Altima and 2008 Rogue and Land Rover groups it with other purge valve codes.
Owners show how stubborn it can be: a Tucson owner says a connector was replaced and the problem persisted, and a Sentra owner says the light returned after a part was changed.
Most likely causes
Cause 1: Wiring or connector fault at the purge valve
Common general cause- Why it ranks here
- TroubleCodes.net lists damaged, corroded or disconnected wiring and connectors and open circuits first. A Tucson dealer replaced the valve connector for this code.
- What would change this
- Rises if the connector is loose, corroded or the wire is broken. Falls if wiring and connector test good.
Cause 2: Failed purge valve solenoid
Supported by vehicle data- Why it ranks here
- Nissan bulletins for the 2006 Altima and 2008 Rogue name P0444 as a purge control solenoid valve circuit open. Land Rover says its listed codes could indicate a purge valve concern.
- What would change this
- Rises if the valve coil reads open when tested. Falls if the coil tests good.
Cause 3: Code returns after a part swap
Possible — needs testing- Why it ranks here
- A Sentra owner and a Focus owner both report the code coming back after parts were replaced. Those owner reports do not identify the cause.
- What would change this
- Rises if a replaced part did not clear the code. Falls if the code stays gone for several trips after repair.
What to test first
Start at step 1. Each result tells you what it means and where to go next.
Step 1: Read all stored codes. Note whether P0443 or P0458 is stored with P0444.
IfP0443 or P0458 is stored too
It meansThe purge valve circuit is suspect from more than one angle; check wiring and valve.
IfP0444 alone
It meansCheck the connector.
Step 2: With the engine off, find the purge valve (usually on or near the intake manifold or the canister line) and check its connector and wiring for damage or corrosion.
IfDamaged or loose connector or wire
It meansRepair it.
IfLooks good
It meansHave the valve coil tested.
Step 3: Have the purge valve coil and its circuit tested with a multimeter against the maker spec.
Warning:The valve sits near fuel vapor lines on a hot engine; keep sparks and flames away and let the engine cool.
IfThe coil reads open
It meansValve is faulty.
IfThe coil tests good but the code returns
It meansHave the control circuit and computer driver checked.
Symptoms
- Check engine light
- Failed emissions test
- Rough idle or stalling if the valve sticks open
How to fix
Step 1: With the engine off, check that the purge valve connector is fully pushed in.
Step 2: Tighten the gas cap and recheck after a few trips.
Parts and cost context
- EVAP canister purge valve:Check the connector and wiring first. A Tucson dealer replaced a connector and the owner says the problem persisted, so confirm with testing. Labor varies; get a quote.
