P0445: EVAP purge valve circuit shorted

EVAP purge control valve circuit shorted

Severity: Monitor

P0445 is an electrical fault in the EVAP purge valve circuit; PartsAvatar does not describe it as a driving danger, though it can cause rough idle.

It gets more serious if:

  • Inspect soon: Have it checked soon if idle is rough or erratic or you smell fuel, both listed symptoms.

P0445 in short

P0445 means the computer found a short in the circuit that operates the EVAP purge valve, which feeds fuel vapor from the canister into the engine. A failed purge valve or shorted wire is the usual cause, though a loose gas cap is also listed. The car usually drives but may idle roughly.

The purge valve meters stored fuel vapor from the charcoal canister into the intake. The computer switches it electrically.

TaT says a short to ground or power in the circuit can cause uncontrolled vapor release.

PartsAvatar says a gas cap fault or EVAP line damage can also be involved, so check the simple items before replacing parts.

Most likely causes

These are general causes for this code across vehicles. None is specific to one make or model.

  1. Cause 1: Purge valve or solenoid with a shorted coil

    Common general cause
    Why it ranks here
PartsAvatar and TaT both point at the valve and its circuit.
    What would change this
Rises if the valve coil reads out of range. Falls if it reads normal.

  2. Cause 2: Wiring shorted to ground or power

    Common general cause
    Why it ranks here
TaT defines the code as a short to ground or power in the circuit; PartsAvatar lists damaged wiring.
    What would change this
Rises if wiring is chafed or corroded. Falls if wiring tests clean.
  3. Cause 3: Gas cap or filler neck problem

    Possible — needs testing
    Why it ranks here
PartsAvatar lists the gas cap first and warns the code can come from something this simple.
    What would change this
Rises if the cap is loose or damaged. Falls if the cap seals and the code returns.
How to test the fuel (gas) cap

What to test first

Start at step 1. Each result tells you what it means and where to go next.

  1. Step 1: Check the gas cap and filler neck for damage and a proper seal, then clear the code.

    Low riskTool: scan tool

  2. Step 2: Have the purge valve resistance and wiring tested with a meter.

    Use cautionTool: multimeter

Warning:Purge valves sit near fuel vapor lines; keep sparks and flames away.

Symptoms

  • Check engine light
  • Rough or erratic idle Gets more serious: stop and have it checked.
  • Fuel smell

How to fix

  1. Step 1: Check the gas cap is tight and its seal is not cracked, then clear the code with a scan tool.

P0445 questions

Can a gas cap cause P0445?

PartsAvatar lists the gas cap among the causes and warns against replacing big parts before checking it.
