P0194: Fuel rail pressure sensor signal dropping out intermittently

Fuel rail pressure sensor signal dropping out intermittently

P0194 in short

P0194 means the engine computer detected an intermittent fault in the fuel rail pressure sensor circuit. The engine may run poorly, lose power or burn more fuel, and in some cases will not start. The sensor itself, damaged wiring or a poor connector are the usual causes.

The fuel rail pressure sensor reports fuel pressure to the computer. P0194 is set when that signal breaks up on and off.

The reference names failure of the sensor from heat and vibration as the main cause, followed by wiring damage, poor connections and intermittent breaks in the signal or reference voltage circuits.

Most likely causes

These are general causes for this code across vehicles. None is specific to one make or model.

  1. Cause 1: Fuel rail pressure sensor failing from heat and vibration

    Common general cause
    Why it ranks here
The reference names sensor failure as the primary cause.
    What would change this
Rises if the circuit tests good and the signal still drops out. Falls if a wiring or connector fault is found.

  2. Cause 2: Damaged wiring or poor connector

    Common general cause
    Why it ranks here
Intermittent breaks in the signal or reference voltage circuits fit an intermittent code.
    What would change this
Rises if bent pins, corrosion or high resistance are found. Falls if every line tests within limits.

What to test first

Start at step 1. Each result tells you what it means and where to go next.

  1. Step 1: Inspect the sensor harness and connector for damage, bent pins, corrosion and a fully seated plug.

    Low risk

  2. Step 2: With the key off, check continuity of each sensor line to the computer and check for shorts, then check voltages key on, engine off against the vehicle specification.

Best left to a shopTool: multimeter

Warning:Fuel rail systems hold pressure and fuel is flammable; do not open fuel lines, and disconnect connectors only with the key off.

Symptoms

  • Engine may not start, or starts and runs poorly
  • Loss of power
  • Reduced fuel economy
  • Check engine light on
