P0193: Fuel rail pressure sensor signal too high

Fuel rail pressure sensor circuit high input

P0193 in short

P0193 means the fuel rail pressure sensor signal is higher than the computer expects. That can be a sensor or wiring fault, or truly high fuel pressure from a regulator, pump or restricted filter. Symptoms include reduced power and hesitation, so get it diagnosed soon.

TaT says the computer sees signal voltage above normal. The cause may be the sensor, a short to power, or wiring.

PartsAvatar says the fault can also be real high pressure from the pump, regulator or a clogged filter.

The way to tell is to compare the sensor with a gauge: if the gauge agrees, the problem is in the fuel system; if not, it is the sensor or circuit.

Most likely causes

These are general causes for this code across vehicles. None is specific to one make or model.

  1. Cause 1: Sensor, wiring or connector fault

    Common general cause
    Why it ranks here
TaT lists sensor, short to power and wiring.
    What would change this
Rises if the gauge pressure is normal. Falls if gauge pressure is truly high.

  2. Cause 2: Real high pressure from regulator, pump or filter

    Common general cause
    Why it ranks here
PartsAvatar lists the pump, regulator and clogged filter.
    What would change this
Rises if the gauge confirms high pressure. Falls if the gauge is normal.
How to test the fuel pump
  3. Cause 3: Injectors or engine computer

    Possible — needs testing
    Why it ranks here
PartsAvatar lists injectors and ECM later.
    What would change this
Rises if the sensor, wiring and pressure test good. Falls if any fault is found.

What to test first

Start at step 1. Each result tells you what it means and where to go next.

  1. Step 1: Compare the sensor reading with a fuel pressure gauge.

Best left to a shopTool: fuel pressure gauge

Warning:Fuel systems are pressurised and flammable. Let a shop do it.

  2. Step 2: Inspect the sensor wiring and connector, then test the sensor.

Best left to a shopTool: multimeter

Warning:Let a shop do this near the fuel rail.

Symptoms

  • Check engine light
  • Hesitation or reduced power Gets more serious: stop and have it checked.
  • Hard starting
  • Poor fuel economy

P0193 questions

Is the sensor or the fuel system at fault?

Compare the sensor with a gauge. PartsAvatar says if the circuit is intact and real pressure is normal, the sensor is most likely at fault.
