C2217: Electric power steering module internal fault (Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, Ram)

Electric power steering module internal

C2217 in short

On Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep and Ram vehicles, C2217 means the electric power steering module found an internal fault. You may see a Service Electric Steering message and lose power assist, making steering heavy. Chrysler has software updates for several models, so have a dealer check bulletins before replacing the steering gear.

Electric power steering uses a motor and control module on the steering gear or column to add assist. The module checks itself constantly. When it finds an internal problem, it stores C2217, turns on the warning light or message, and may cut assist until the next restart.

Chrysler (FCA) bulletins tie this code to loss of power steering on the 2021–2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee and the 2024 Chrysler Pacifica, Voyager and Dodge Durango. For the 2024–2025 Dodge Charger, Chrysler told dealers they were replacing steering gears for C2217 without first doing the steering module software update.

So the first step is to check for a software update. Chrysler's 2016–2017 guidance did allow replacing the steering gear when C2217-00 is stored.

C2217 questions

Does C2217 always mean a new steering gear?

No. On several recent models Chrysler addressed it with a steering module software update, and it told Charger dealers to do the update before replacing the gear.

Can I drive with C2217?

You can still steer if assist is lost, but it takes much more effort. Drive only if you can steer safely, and have it checked soon.
